He does it in part to stick it to Jen because she was the one who dumped him. Oh yes he was a pathetic loser couch potato leading a useless and boring and shallow pathetic life stuck in an unfulfilling marriage. That is the message he has put out to the public. He made the absolute right decision to take up with Jolie on MAMS (marriage be damned), his children and the "family life" they share are proof positive that he did the right thing. Now he is deep, no longer living the shallow life, now he involves himself in the problems of the world and is not that shallow, pathetic, bored person that he once was. That is what he puts out to the public in his own seemingly self-effacing way.
Of course it is a lie. He is just as self-involved, shallow and bored as he always was, but he can't lose face and he has to stick it to Jen because she caused him a narcissistic injury by dumping him. He is trying to portray Jen as being the shallow and self-involved one. He is projecting his own deficiencies of character onto her, and doing it publicly while trying to be self-effacing at the same time. The public doesn't buy it and are disgusted that he would imply hurtful things about his ex-wife when at the same time he has shown no contrition for having hurt her.
He could have told the truth like you say but could he have if it was Jen who decided to dump him? They have made it seem like he broke Jen's heart by leaving her in the dust and blazing a trail over to Jolie, but if it is true that Jen had two miscarriages and that Jennifer was the one who dumped his ass for cheating on her,well that doesn't portray him as the golden boy being fought over by two women and breaking one woman's heart.
I think he enjoys twisting the knife into Jen but it doesn't work because she is long over him, the more she is over him the more deeply he will twist the knife because he wants her to hurt. That it doesn't hurt her must drive him bonkers.
