everyone i think has a different opionion as to whats acceptable or not and where to draw the line over something beccoming racially offensive.

that trident add for example, you know the one karrin. "mastication for the nation!" where the black guy with a thick caribbean accent was going about telling the whole of london how good trident gum was. i found that advert quite funny actually ... so did my mother and sister

then a while later more adverts came up for trident gum but this time it had a white person instead of the other guy ..but the white person were speaking in a caribbean accent trying to mimic the first guy. again i found it funny ...so did my mother and sister, didn't take offence to it at all ...then soon the adverts stopped and i learned that offcom had recieved around 600 complaints from members of the public saying the adverts were racist so had taken them off air. i was a little surprised at this as the thought of the advert being racist in any way never even enterned my head

..anyways the adverts were taken off then a while later they came back with new ones but they were just talking in normal voices now ..and generally the adverts had lost their spark imo

everyone has a level of what they find racially tollerable
big brother thought emily's comment was unacceptable behavior so chose to throw her out....
had she been black and said it to charly ..who knows what big brother would have done.. i guess we'll never know

I know a fair few negro/black/coloured people and none of them are in the habit of calling each other that word!

Im not sure what the correct term is for a negro/black/coloured person but for white people it's caucasian isnt it? In any case I dont get offended when someone refers to us as whites. Whats the point lol

As we all have the same colour pigment in our skin, just in different concentrations. I hate any term that refers to anyone as being one colour or the other. There is only one colour for humans, and that is the colour of melanin.

But the difference is Danielle caucasian doesn't have negative connotations and it wasn't used throughout history as an insult. Whatever way that word is used now and whatever way Emily intended it to be taken any black person has the absolute and unequivocal right to be offended by that word whenever it is used.
If Emily said that the word just popped out then that implies that she uses it in normal everyday life and whether it is done in a joking way or not the use of that word is wrong and the fact that she has been removed from the house will if nothing else let people that even those that didn't think so.
I also completely agree with Karrin Charley used the N word quite a bit after Emily did and even said that it was okay for her to use it I think that is completely wrong if Charley is offended by Emily's use of the word towards her then why does she think it's okay to use it herself? I find certain words in particular the word sp****c very offensive and tell anyone that uses it around me so, if i use the word myself then it makes my point mut.

The terms "Black" and "White" are racially derogative too. Why must we stereotype people's skin tones into two opposite groups? They are separatist terms stemming back from the days of slavery. The christian slave masters considered themselves to be more pure and holy because they were "white" and their slaves were considered to be the opposite, due to their skin tone, and they were called "black".
It was just a poor excuse they used to justify their having slaves though.

The "N" word is a stereotypical reference to a location in Africa (with the addition of a second "g". The "N" word, and the term "black" were both used in exactly the same context.
To me both terms can be equally as offensive because they have the same origins.
Here, in Australia, we would never hear someone in the media use any of those terms. If they did, they'd probably be in serious trouble! :?

I agree, but then coloured , ofey and such the like can be seen as the same

Oh, yeah. I forgot about that word. Isn't that a terrible term? :? I'd put that up there with the "N" word. Personally.

PS. I'm glad you realised I'm not trying to tell you, or anyone else what to do, and that I'm in no way trying to be argumentative. :)

That Trident ad was just nonesens, reminded me of the Frank Bruno ads, I think alot of people found it offensive cos it showed the often used image of the black man as a buffoon.. I dunno I just found it was stupid.
Had C4 not thrown Charly out if she'd uttered that word it would be just as bad.. they all get shown the rules and should be treated equally

Well the term used for "black" people of West Indian descent is Afro Carribean... I dunno I dont think any term is particuarly useful , but the N word is a no-no

nope, if they did that then they'd have to remove the terms "blonde" "brunette" "redhead" "ginger" etc cos people seem to need to use these terms all the time lol

This isn't defending Emily here, frankly she knew the rules and she got punished for breaking them, end of.

To see the use of a word (any word) itself as that unacceptably bad is more than a little childish. Rascism is a behaviour and not a component of language and it would be nice if everyone who is actually involved remembered that.

Using derogatory / abusive terms within groups is a typical common bond affirmation behaviour. In this case the group bond did not exist and she definitely shouldn't have used that language. In terms of the use of derogatory language the protocol is that a member of the deprecated group (be that an ethnic or any other kind of group) set a precedent for the use of such language. One which clearly was not present in the BB house.

Emily had no idea if the language may or may not be considered offensive by the people she was talking to when she used it. Even though I saw the clips and in the context it was clearly not intended to be offensive, Charley could have easily and justifiably been offended and that's why the big brother team had to step in and rightly so.

I agree with u up to the point of Emily not knowing what she said was offensive cos as soon as it came out of he mouth she was "cacking herself", trying to gloss it over and looking so nervous. Again I dont for one minute think she meant to be offensive but she damn well knoew it was the minute she said it
