A remarkable speech by Robert Fitch puts Obama’s early career in a new perspective that explains the man we see now in the Oval Office: one who pretends to befriend ordinary people but sells them out again and again to wealthy, powerful interests – the banks, big Pharma and health insurers, and lately, the fracking-industrial complex.

Fitch, who died last year, was an academic and journalist, well regarded for his forensic and archival work, as described by Doug Henwood in an obituary in the Nation. He is best known for his book Solidarity for Sale, which chronicled corruption in American unions, but his work that is germane to his analysis of Obama is Assassination of New York. In that, he documented the concerted efforts by powerful real estate and financial interests to drive manufacturing and low-income renters out of Manhattan so they could turn it over to office and residential space for high income professionals.

Fitch gave his remarkable speech before an unlikely audience at an unlikely time: the Harlem Tenants Association in November 2008, hard on the heels of Obama’s electrifying presidential win. The first part contains his prescient prediction: that Obama’s Third Way stance, that we all need to put our differences aside and get along, was tantamount to advocating the interests of the wealthy, since they seldom give anything to the have-nots without a fight.

That discussion alone is reason to read the piece. But the important part is his description of the role that Obama played in the redevelopment of the near South Side of Chicago, and how he and other middle class blacks, including Valerie Jarrett and his wife Michelle, advanced at the expense of poor blacks by aligning themselves with what Fitch calls “friendly FIRE”: powerful real estate players like the Pritzkers and the Crown family, major banks, the University of Chicago, as well as non-profit community developers and real estate reverends.

Obama recently visited an American Indian reservation where he gave a fine speech outlining all the wonderul things he plans to do for the Native American community. Following his speech, the elders performed a naming ceremony in which Obama was given the Native American name, "Walking Eagle". Obama beamed with pleasure, smiling and waving as he left for his next campaign stop. A reporter, curious about the name, asked one of the elders for its meaning. The elder replied, "Walking Eagle means eagle so full of shyte it can no longer fly."

It scares me that you buy into more than 20 - 30% of that, Hot Tea. There's plenty of things that concern me greatly, but I could rebut most of that post... as well as exchanging "Obama" for the name; "Romney".

As for his own party... maybe I'm misunderstanding, but his party has stood against several of his proposals, even just this week. A president who doesn't have the support of his own party doesn't scare me as much as it leaves me to question the leadership, however, I does make me very proud of our system. It works.

France is a curious country, despite being no more than 20 miles away from the UK. On the one hand they have just elected an openly socialist leader, whereas our Labour Party is still far too jittery to use the S-word and under Blair didn't even know if it even wanted to call itself Labour, on the other hand the extreme right-wing Front National has polled a disturbing number of votes.

Here, after a brief surge, the extreme right BNP has been annihilated in recent elections. In part I think this is due to a brave decision by the BBC to allow its leader Nick Griffin to appear on the BBC's flagship political debate program Question Time. To be honest I thought it was the wrong decision and would legitimise the BNP as a respectable political party. I was wrong, Griffin made a complete clown of himself, indeed in many way he is a complete clown, but a dangerous clown surrounded by nasty shaven-headed fascist thugs. In essence he is a polished turd in a suit.



Oh and trust me as a socialist myself Obama is far from being a socialist/Marxist, he just isn't a rabid right-winger like Bush.

Four years ago, Obama told Rick Warren that marriage was between a man and a woman. Okay, I understand changing our minds, as I have changed my mind about same sex marriage... but I'm not in public office where we want to take someone at their word. HOWEVER... as "Church Lady" would say, "Isn't that convenient" that he comes out now to flip on the issue just days before Hollywood writes their checks to him. I can't help but to believe this is 100% political for his reelection.

Personally, I think the future is here with regards to understanding what went wrong. The problem is, no one (in power or of the people) wants to admit what the problem is because it would require great sacrifice to repair it. An appropriate analogy for this situation is: Don't shoot the messenger. Unfortunately, this messenger is going to get hanged, stoned, plucked and roasted for dinner.

The juxtaposition of any political figure seeking to effectively repair the economy would require alienating their support base, acknowledging they will accept one term and most likely be targeted for assassination. The policies and entitlements that would require austerity measures would essentially affect every citizen as it would ultimately require a lower standard of living for many years to come. That is a hard pill to swallow for any nation.

Again, this is my personal view.

New book details Obama's fondness for weed while a Hawaiian high school student

WASHINGTON - Barack Obama inhaled. Frequently, happily and allegedly quite greedily.

Various websites published excerpts on Friday from an upcoming book on the U.S. president containing fresh details about his enthusiasm for marijuana as a young man, adding a bit of levity to a close and increasingly nasty presidential race.

"Barry also had a knack for interceptions," according to just one anecdote in David Maraniss's "Barack Obama: The Story," slated for release in mid-June.

"When a joint was making the rounds, he often elbowed his way in, out of turn, shouted 'Intercepted!' and took an extra hit."

When he attended Punahoa prep school in Honolulu in the '70s, Obama was also at the forefront of ensuring he and his high school pals — known as the Choom Gang, with choom a Hawaiian slang verb for smoking weed— got the most bang for their buck.

"Barry popularized the concept of 'roof hits,'" Maraniss writes.

"When they were chooming in the car, all the windows had to be rolled up so no smoke blew out and went to waste; when the pot was gone, they tilted their heads back and sucked in the last bit of smoke from the ceiling."

The revelations were met with glee in the Twitterverse and beyond.

Buzzfeed entitled its post on the revelations "A User's Guide to Smoking Pot with Barack Obama," while a Twitter wag joked that the Republicans now had potential ammunition in hand.

"'Wasting good bud smoke was not tolerated,' explained one member of the Choom Gang, Tom Topolinski, the Chinese-looking kid with a Polish name who answered to Topo."
