Exactly what I had on today. I hardly ever wear high heels, partly because they are, as you say, practical (and comfortable) and partly because I'm fairly tall as is.

It probably varies from one workplace to another, but where I am I don't think that wearing high heels would make any difference to my prospects of promotion. In any case, I'm in middle management now and I don't have any inclination to go for a promotion at the moment.
As for your two suggestions, I would go with the second.
And I have a pair of plain black low heeled shoes on today.....
