Implanon

Postby JessW » Sun Sep 10, 2006 4:03 pm

I too am on my second implanon implant. I had my first one removed after 3 years last December. I had absolutely no problems with my first one at all and raved to all my friends about how fantastic it was. No periods for the first 2 years, and then regular after that, I lost weight, no mood swings - it was great!

But then I had a new one inserted and I've had nothing but a nightmare ever since. I bleed almost every day, I'm now suffering with depression, I have constant headaches and I've put on almost a stone and I hardly eat anything!!

So in response to many of the posts above, I think that it IS possible to have different side effects with your second. I'm going to have mine taken out..... I'm fed up now

Implanon + other pills and bleeding

Postby Pazzamatazz » Wed Sep 20, 2006 7:53 am

I've been reading all the messages here - very envious of you girls on implanon without any probs!!!

I've been on implanon for the last 4 months and have been bleeding ever since - normally lightly, but sometimes heavy (guess that's been my "period") and horrible tummy cramps!!!

Was just about to have it taken out a month ago..then it stopped for a few weeks...then it started again...rushed to the doctors...they gave me micronor (another pill) which i took for six days and have immediately stopped because my periods are now horrendously heavy and painful...which I still have..and it's my wedding day on Saturday (3 days!!!)!!!! NOT HAPPY!!!!

So I can't have it removed (the bruise will look great in the photos & everyone will ask about it)...and because of the sexual health clinic's minimal opening times, there's no chance of me getting there before the wedding!!!

I think it's one of those things that works differently for every person!!!!!

Re: Implanon contraceptive implant-weight loss after removal

Postby QT » Fri Sep 22, 2006 5:32 am

I had my Implanon inserted for two years, just after I had my first baby. During the first two months I had slight bleeding but from third month onwards on I did not have my period at all. I think I did gain some weight during the time. I have recenlty removed it (4 weeks ago) as my hubby and I are planning for our second one. Was wondering if anyone knows how long does it take to conceive or have the menstrual period return?

Re: Implanon

I'm on my fifth year of Implanon (2nd one). The first three years I had no periods at all, my weight was fine but my libido wasn't. On the second Implanon my periods came back after 5 months and I started to get acne and gain weight but soon after a year and a half of the second one I've noticed my periods becoming more regular, the acne vanished and I've since had a sex drive, yeppy!!

I have had my implant for almost 2 years now, but due to not having a boyfriend for the most of it, and the terrible acne, iv decided to have it removed on the 19th of this month. Im 17 years old, and im really nervous. The woman i spoke to at the clinic said that they dont use local Anaesthetic when removing it. Is this true? I just researched on a few sites and they said that local anaesthetic is part of the removal procedure, so surely the receptionist at the clinic must be mistaken, right? Please put my mind at rest as the thought of having my implant removed without any pain relief makes me very nervous. Im not good with pain. thank you for replying x

Implanon

Postby leleflump » Tue Oct 17, 2006 8:11 pm

After much agonising over whether or not to have my implanon out I had it removed this morning, I have had 2 implants over the last 4 years with approx 3 stone weight gain and severe clinical depression resulting i 5 months signed off work. With hindsight I can see that these things have most likely been as a result of implanon. I have a history of depression and about a month after the first implant was put in I hit rock bottom with depression and had to be signed off work. The weight gain has been steady and nothing I do shifts it (the last 2 months I have stuck to a diet and upped my exercise from nothing to 30 mins 6x a week and lost precisely 0lb!)
I can relate to some of the comments that have been made about constantly feeling hungry too - I recently made a very similar comment to my partner - I don't always feel hungry but i very rarely (if ever) feel full - I can't remember if I had the same feeling (or lack of it)before I had the implant but i suspect not.
At the clinic this morning I was honest and said that i felt the implant had contributed to my weight gain (I was already overweight when the first implant was put in) and that I wanted it out to try and lose the weight so that i can start a family (I don't want to be a overweight mum) the dr tod me I was stupid to want the implant out for this reason and that it couldn't possibly have contributed to my weight gain, She went on and on and on about it talking to me like a child (I am 27 btw!) and said that i would be pregnant in weeks because she didn't believe that my partner and i would use condoms!!!
The only time that she admitted that the implant had side effects was when i mentioned depression as a passing comment and she told me that the implant can cause depression - she was all sympathy for that one! She has taken the implant out and I have made a formal complaint against her.

Implanon

Postby JustJules » Sat Oct 21, 2006 10:30 pm

I have been reasured by all the comments above.

I gave birth to a beautiful daughter at the beginning of July, she is our second child. We don't want any more children and decided that the best form of contraception would be the implant.

I had it fitted about a month ago, and apart from horrendous bruising it went well. Recently I have started to be really depressed, crying almost all day every day, feeling tired and unable to cope. I have also had some headaches and cramps. I thought I was going mad. I had to go back to work fairly early and thought that it was this (I usually enjoy my work) and postnatal depression making me feel so depressed.

Having read all your comments I realise that it is probably the implant making me feel like this. I am going to give it a bit longer to settle down as I know the doctor will say that I haven't given it long enough, but if its not better after the next 2 months its coming out!

I just wanted to say thank you for contributing to this and making me realise its not just me.

implanon

Postby laura6 » Tue Oct 24, 2006 10:22 am

I had my implanon removed after having them for four years. I was getting terrible mood swings, heavy periods, painful periods, depressed etc etc. I had it removed on 12th July and was told by doctor I had to wait for period so I could go on pill. I was told I would be safe for the first week or so but after that to use a condom. I am now 15 weeks pregnant after concieving on the 15th July. Luckily we were thinking about starting a family, but if you do not want one use precaution straight away. I did have a bad spell of mood swings and being depressed up to 2 weeks after it was removed but now have never felt better and even though i am pregnant have lost weight and my relationshp is better than ever. Love Laura

Implanon

Postby alannaloo » Fri Oct 27, 2006 4:07 pm

Well I feel normal now that I am reading all these posts. I got implanon inserted in March this year and from May to July I had constant periods. Not very convenient. They seemed to clear up after the doctor put me on the pill for a month to try to regulate them but this month im on day 13 with no signs of stopping. I have also suffered some signs of depression in this time scale with no real reason why. I am actually quite annoyed at my Doctor who didnt mention any of these side effects when advising me to get implanon, especially as I have been on anti depressents in the past. It really does help to read that Im not alone in this though.

I have used the implant for over two years and have lived in hell for most of it!!! I wish i'd researched it sooner because I seriously thought I was going mad!!
I nearly cried with relief to see that it isn't just me and I have not been imagining it all. I have put on weight become soooo moody, almost to violence and I have never been that sort of person. My periods seem a constant part of my life, just seem to finish one and then comes the next. My boobs are painful, even to touch is agony.
I have an appointment on Monday for it's removal, I'm not expecing miracles but just hope to feel normal again. The doctors are crazy if they aren't aware of these other symptoms we are feeling, they just have to read some of the many posts written on forums all across the world to see that we are not alone and the experiences are very similar.

It was put in October 2004 and I weighed 8.2 stone, now I weigh 12.3 stone so i've gained over 4 stone. I've become extremely depressed and also very self-conscious, I don't even like to go out on my own any more... I am so fed up now that I can't wait to have it out... Also did any one have real trouble having it out due to the weight gain?

It really helps reading your comments.

hi lucy, i also experienced bad weight gain with my implanon ive only had it in 6 months and ive gained just over 3 stone so seeing the docs tomorrow about getting it removed, im also very self concious as i now have stretch marks from the weight gain!i was a size 12 top half and 14 in trousers now an 18 in trousers, 14 in tops. Have you lost any of the weight you gained since havin the implant out as i would really hope to lose some of mine. Laura.
