Vaginal odour

Postby Guest » Mon May 09, 2005 4:54 am

I wash down there every day and change my knickers every day but I get that yucky fishy smell in the evenings. I don't have any infections.

If the smell is really bad then maybe you do have an infection? Or maybe it just gets hot and sweaty down there? (like under your arms). perhaps you could try a vaginal deodarant / perfume of some kind, i think Barefoot Doctor make one - try searching for them on the net.

Is sounds as though you have Bacterial Vaginosis.

Most women with BV have no symptoms at all. Sometimes a woman has more vaginal discharge than usual. The discharge might be milky with a “fishy” odor. The odor can be worse after sex. Other symptoms women may experience include itching or burning in or near the vagina.

BV is usually not serious. In some cases, however, it can cause infections in the uterus and fallopian tubes. It is important to treat BV, especially before having an IUD inserted, an abortion, or tests done on the uterine lining. BV during pregnancy may cause the baby to be born too soon.

The clinician can prescribe an antibiotic, taken by mouth, called metronidazole or Flagyl®. There is also a vaginal cream. This medicine can cause nausea or a metal aftertaste in the mouth for some people. Take it with food. DO NOT DRINK ALCOHOL ANY TIME WHILE TAKING THIS MEDICINE. This medicine can cause severe nausea and vomiting when combined with alcohol. Either use a condom or do not have sex until you have finished taking the antibiotic. The clinician can order antibiotic vaginal creams or gels which work just as well, but the cost is higher. The side effects are less with vaginal antibiotics.

Shaving does help. I had to do that when I had the same problem.

I understand what is a bacterial vaginosis. However, what could it be when there's no discharge and just an odour? How does shaving help?

I have the same problem, a fishy smelling yellowy discharge, sorry to go in to detail, but when the discharge comes i can feel it sort of 'girgle out'. I havent been to my GP yet, because i find it very embarrasing, but it is a pain to wear pantyliners all the time. Any ideas what it is and what i could do about it?

It works the same way as your arm pits work. The less hair you have under your arms, the less odour will be found. Everyone will agree with me on that one....and we don't discharge there.

A healthy vagina does NOT smell like fish! If you are having that odor, you do have an infection, probably either bacterial vaginosis, trich or or Gardinerella vaginosis. Gardinerella and trich are STDs that you can spread. All are treated the same way, with metronidazole and an antibiotic.

Yeast infections do not smell like fish; they don't have an unpleasant odor. See your doctor.

There's clearly an imbalance downstairs - try putting natural plain yoghurt on the area to help rebalance the bacteria...if the smell persists after a few tries with yoghurt then defo go to the doctors...It's worth trying yoghurt though as docs can be embarassing

I'm sorry, but yogurt doesn't clear a vaginal infection of any kind. The possibility of 2 different STDs is important enough to see a doctor! If you are sexually active, you are grown up enough to see a doctor for an infection!

Don't be embarrased, docs see these things every day, you're not any different from anyone else, and I promise you he will forget about seeing you right after you leave. That's their job!

believe it or not - but many women (including myself) have an unpleasant odour but when tested (for fungus/yeasts/bacteria/vaginal PH/BV/Gardinerella/TV etc, etc, etc) have come up negative!

I do not have the answers, but agree that shaving helps, as there is less chance of retaining moisture (and feeding bacteria) with no hair.
whatever you do - do not douch though!

Those are the most common causes; there are myriads of others, including vaginitis (not the same as BV), cervicitis, endometritis, salpingitis, cervical, uterine or bowel cancer, pelvic inflammatory disease, granuloma inguinale, and chlamydia. There are others, but another possibility is in some cases, a tampon doesn't have a string and becomes stuck, you wouldn't notice it, but the smell is awful. A dislodged diaphragm or IUD can cause odor as well.

Just because you test negative for BV, TV and Gardnerella, doesn't mean there isn't something else to look for. There should not be a foul odor, period.
