Hi All

I've had bad acne since I was 11 and I've tried everything and I've now been on roaccutane for nearly 3 and a half months and my skin has improved 100%, and i've still got a few months treatment left.

I've experienced some side effects such as extreme dry skin and chapped lips. But i've been using aqueous cream and E45 cream, both recommended by my Dermatologist. I use the aqueous cream to wash with and to put on 'lightly' as a day moisturiser under make up and then I use E45 cream before I go to bed, as this is heavier. The worst problem has been my lips, in the earlier stages, my lips were terrible and I would slather vaseline on them as recommended by the Dermatalogist, but this wasn't working, so I have been putting E45 cream on my lips and this has helped loads.
I've also experienced heavy nosebleeds, which is a common side effect. But I bought a nose spray and use that every morning and that seems to have helped.

I know these side effects are a massive pain, but as my skin has improved so much, so has my confidence and having dry skin and chapped lips for a while is better 'for me' than having huge painful spots and the worry that they might scar.

I had a mini breakout about 2 months into the treatment, but this was due, 'so my Dermatalogist told me' to the fact that I'd invested in a day cream that was too heavy and greasy for my face and told me to stop using it and continue with aqueous cream, which I did and within a few days, my skin was looking much better again.

I've also noticed that if I do get the occasional spot, it heals quickly as opposed to before the treatment when it wouldn't heal or just leave red marks under the skin.

A friend of mine also has bad skin and has been having laser surgery for about 9 months and i'd say it's only improved about 50% and every time she goes back they say for her to have another session and it's costing her a fortune, but that's obviously her choice as she didn't want to go on roacutane.

There are days when I feel a bit miserable, but that's just normal and I would have miserable days even when I wasn't on the treatment, so I never put it down to the roacutane, as I say it's normal to have good and bad days. Just remember to try to be positive throughout any treament you decide to take.

Good luck
Lexi

Acne treatment

Postby Gilliebean » Mon Feb 11, 2008 7:04 pm

I've started taking my 15 year-old son for regular visits to the aestetician for "extraction" treatment. He has lots of acne all over his face, and deep dark pores. The treatments don't necessarily stop new outbreaks, but the blackheads are cleared up, and the scarring seems to have improved.

I have also given him a Burdock Root herbal supplement, which supports the liver, thereby cleaning the blood. I have read that it can interfere with iron absorption, however. When he remembers to take it regularly, it seems to make a big difference. It really worked for my middle-aged acne, but I have chronically low hemoglobin, so I stopped taking it. Now in my mid-forties, things seemed to have cleared up all on their own. Halleluhia!

Give it a go

Postby Amy79 » Wed Feb 13, 2008 9:28 am

Hi. I am 28 and still suffering from acne since my pregnancy 6 years ago. I get it on my face and back and some times they are more like boils then spots. Up until 3 months ago I thought I had tried eveything until someone reccomended DERMALOGICA. I have a facial everymonth, which only cost £30 and have invested in the products- cleanser, toner and moisteriser. My spots have not gone but i have def seen an inprovement. Its kinder to your skin than lazer treatments and also your bank balance :D Oh and I also swaer by lemon and hot water in the morning- ultimate detox :)

If your cycles are far apart your acne may be do to PCOS. Even if your blood tests don't come back possitive for PCOS, metformin may help.
PCOS blood tests are very sensitive and need to be done approx 2 wks after you start a cycle. Metformin is a mild diabetic drug that not only regulates some peoples cycles but for many completely clears up acne.

If acne is very effected by hormones with someone, metformin usually does the trick

Basically i was starting up this thread for anyone to list any new treatments they may have tried (i've read about something called Nlite?) because this is seriously starting to get me down!

Any soaps, vitamins, foods, advice - do's and don'ts, private treatments, beauty treatments, make-up etc...anything! any acne advice what so ever please post up!

well i have tried many different medications none worked at all to tell you the truth i tried proactive because many people have suggested it that also didnt work at all so i saw something at walgreens called Acne Free sounds really cheasy but it worked very well for me i use the severe foaming cream and the terminator spot treatment its not expensive in the least and can be found as i said before at walgreens there is some for none severe also as i mentioned before it can be found at any store really target walgreens CVS frys safeway walmart

Hiya
I really do sympathise with you 100%

I suffered with acne from the age of about 12 until i was about 20 and it would have continued if it wasnt for be persistant with my doctor. The 1st time i saw him he gave me some cream, which dried my skin out, the spots were still there- it just ment i couldnt cover them with makeup anymore because the skin was too peely. The second time i went to him he gave me antibiotics, they also did sweet FA!. After that my dad came with me and told the doctor that this simply couldnt continue and asked him to refer to me to a dermatologist.

The dermatologist was very sympathetic and p ut me on Roaccutane. I had heard the horror stories about depression but for me- id never felt better. I saw results within about 2 weeks and a couple of weeks down the line my skin was completely clear and i mean completely, it was wonderful, and i cant help wondering how people could become so depressed on a drug that made you look so good after such a long battle.

I came off it and slowly the acne did return-mildly. I was prescribed the pill Dianette which kept the acne under control, (maybe one or two spots a month and that was it).You cant stay on Dianette for more than 6-12 months though, the next best pill for your skin is called Yasmin- ive been on this for years now and im still looking pretty good on it, i get the odd week when i get 2 or 3 spots, but generally things are pretty good. hope this helps.

Has anyone here tried Clinique's line for acne? My 15 year old nephew has developed really bad acne in the last year and he's tried almost every skin care line available, to no avail. Some worked for a while, but then the acne flared up again. One of his mom's co-worker's suggested the Clinque line and he's been using it since last November with amazingly consistent results. The breakouts are very minimal now and the scarring is already begining to clear up. They have a "stick" with something in it that's supposed to help with the scarring and it seems to be working quite well. They even have a starter kit you can buy initially just to try out without going through the expense of buying the full sized products. The kit lasted him just over a month. Beware though, don't get the clarifying lotion too close to the eyes or lips because it can be quite drying. He's been using it only on the problem areas with great results.

Re: water helps- not

It's very true that hormones are the cause of most acne problems. But it is necessary to drink enough water to help the kidneys flush toxins out of the blood, which can contribute to breakouts. If your body is toxic, you'll breakout regardless of how good your diet or skin care regimen is. And certain foods can wreak havoc with hormones, which of course affects the skin. You really are what you eat and drink. Most definitely drink plenty of water to keep the kidneys flushing. And watch the junk food especially prior to the onset of your period. I found in the past if I ate sweets and red meat about 10 days before my period, not only would I breakout, but I'd get wicked cramping and clotting also. But my diet has changed dramatically in the last decade and I keep it pretty clean these days. Now I'm envied for my clear and smooth complexion. But all it takes is a diet binge and back come the breakouts.
