Google Chrome

Postby Topic Of Gossip » Sat Sep 06, 2008 5:38 pm

Has anybody tried Google's new web browser?

http://www.google.com/chrome

Any thoughts on how good it is? Or is it just... another browser.

Do you think Google Chrome will ever depose Internet Explorer, or even Firefox, as the browser of choice?

Honestly - don't touch it with a bargepole. Not for a while at least.

It's built on (an old version of) the Apple Safari browser codebase, which contains a number of nasty cross platform security bugs. Safari is pretty well reknowned for being a swiss cheese of a browser. People slate IE for that, but it's safari that holds the crown by far.

I wouldn't be surprised if a Google browser tracks . habits like their search engine does if we forget to log out. :?

Hello...
General information regarding Chrome...

Google Chrome is a web browser developed by Google and based on the WebKit layout engine and application framework. It was first released as a beta version for Microsoft Windows on September 2, 2008, and the public stable release was on December
11, 2008. The name is derived from the graphical user interface frame, or "chrome", of web browsers. In April 2009, Chrome was the fourth most widely used browser, with 1.42% of worldwide usage share of web browsers.

Anyone updating DivX should be aware the latest version (ver7) comes packaged with Google Chrome. They don't tell us this, so I didn't notice until it began installing. In hind-sight, I should have been more vigilant in checking what the separate components are.
It's no biggie to get rid of though, because Google Chrome is not integrated with DivX, so it can easily be removed via Add and Remove Programs, which is what I did. :)
I'm using Windows. I don't know if the Apple DivX package includes Google Chrome.

Google Chrome has still not progressed even as far as a first beta yet for Linux, which is ironic because that's what Google itself runs on.

I actually prefer Google Chrome to Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox...
I was never that into Firefox but Chrome definately makes searching the web easier... not to mention it is a lot more customizable.

Yess! But recently FemaleFirst seem to have changed their website coding, now I can't get rid of that RHS column with the adds, even using adblock, any thoughts? This is a problem with firefox too of course.

Try the AdThwart extension on Chrome, seems to be still doing the job.

Well after some time spent trying out various extensions, I found Adblock and it's helpers not much use, in the end using the "Personalized Web" extension in Chromium and adding:
Code: Select all
div.updatedSign {display: none;}
#SideBar {display: none;}
div.Features {display: none;}
#MainContent {width: 100% !important}

... did the trick! I'm not sure every line is necessary but I was adding one at a time to see the effect.

Probably "Stylish" in Firefox would work but I haven't tried it.

Phew!

I used to have on my desktop when I used to do some behind the scenes helping out for a website in case anyone needed to be talked through difficulties using our site with this browser but it never did anything for me over what I get from Firefox so I uninstalled it.
