Re: Women in Jeans & Trousers

Thanks to all those who have contributed to this post. I recently conducted a survey at lunchtime in a business area of a city centre. 100 women were interviewed at random.

The weather was warm and sunny.

32 were wearing skirts or dresses
68 were wearing trousers or jeans

Of the 32 wearing skirts or dresses:-
20 occasionally wore trousers to work, 12 always wore skirts.
Of the 12 the reasons were dress code - 6;
personal preference - 5;
religious reasons - 1;

25 of the 32 stated that they usually changed into a pair of jeans or casual trousers/leggings etc as soon as they got home - claiming that they felt more comfortable and could relax better than in a skirt/dress.
4 occasionally wore jeans and trousers around the home, especially when cleaning/gardening etc
3 rarely wore trousers - 1 for religious reasons, 1 prefered the more feminine look of skirts/dresses and 1 felt that she did not look good in trousers due to body shape.

I will not continue too long with data as few people like long posts but one fact emerged which possibly contributed to an increase in younger women always being in trousers was the change of school uniform in favour of girls wearing trousers to school in the early 1990s. It seems that girls then regarded being in trousers as the norm and few decided to wear skirts when obtaining employment.

Any comments would be welcome.

That's an interesting thing to think about. Quite frankly, I haven't thought about it recently. :D Nowadays it's perfectly OK for women to wear trousers or jeans, which probably makes us think that it's not much of an issue any more, leastways not here in Europe. (Of course, there are several countries where women wearing trousers or jeans are frowned upon or they are simply not allowed to wear such articles. But I don't think I need to elaborate on this - it has already been discussed ad nauseam I reckon.) However, believe it or not, there still are people who assume that wearing trousers or jeans is incompatible with feminity. As far as I remember, someone posted here once that her boyfriend was appalled by the very idea of women (including his girlfriend) wearing trousers.

As for me...I do wear trousers and jeans quite often. When I was younger, I used to hate jeans with a vengeance. Everybody was wearing them all the time, except for me. But now, at the grand old age of 25 :lol: I do. Well, not all the time but regularly, even though they still aren't my favourite articles. I even wear them with a leather jacket or a blazer, which is not the most feminine combo conceivable, but there you go...I'm not your typical girly girl, either. :D I mean I do look feminine, but I'm a bit of a ladette on the inside...or might I say tomboy(ish)? The word "ladette" has rather negative implications, doesn't it? :mrgreen: But it's neither here nor there.

So anyway, I wear jeans and trousers but funnily enough I find dresses and skirts an awful lot more comfortable. Simply because they don't stick onto certain (very precious) parts of my body. :) As far as femininity is concerned, you can look absolutely fit in dressy trousers or jeans but skirts and dresses give you a feminine look in a more traditional way. But I reckon my preferences have nothing to do with the issue of femininity, tradition or religion - it's just how I feel comfortable.

Well I hope that helps.

I have now completed my study and sent off my final portfolio.

Thank you to all of you who contributed with thoughts and comments.

One thing I have noticed recently is an increase in women wearing leather trousers - and not bikers either. Have leather trousers come back into fashion?

Just to let you all know, I passed my correspondence course and have received my Certificate.

Many thanks to all of the women on this Forum who contributed with their thoughts and preferences regarding wearing (or not wearing) trousers and jeans.

Every woman likes to be cautious about her looks and appearance. Anyway, fashion is mostly related to women. It can also be said that fashion is synonymous to women. But the fact is that fashion is not just about dressing, but many things add to it.

This is very nice sharing. I would like to give my opinion on this topic, why some people do not wear trousers. Actually it is nothing like that as you are thinking but in various places, it is considered that this fashion is against of my culture. They think that these items are made for men not for women. It is the most common thing in developing country. Anyway it is very great sharing. I hope to be continuing in such type of views sharing in future.

Hi,
I wear skirts and dresses because its
- easier
- more comfortable,
- more femine
- people take more notice of you
- get more complements, no one has ever complimented me in jeans. Turn up in a dress for a coffee and out they come
- cooler in summer
- Winter is not an issue, boots and heavy material skirt or dress works fine
- And yes HB loves me too

I occasionally wear jeans and yes tight jeans and heels looks hot in his eyes as well

India, not one myself, but have been over there for HB's work. The young girls wear jeans, alot because culturally they don't have much alt choice. They cannot wear short anything outside high end Mumbai, Delhi etc. Sari is considerd dressy by middle class and usually limited to special occasions or once you are married when in some parts the women would be expected to wear it daily. unless you are working class and wear plane and because they can afford little else its hard to do much work apart from office style in modern dressy sari. The alt ? suit, thing with back to front scarf and tunic top and loose pants is their only other choice. So jeans are considered modern, westerm can be tight as but still tolerated by older. All though they older class prefer bums to be covered. Jeans also made locally relatively cheaply. About $10-15 a pair. The girls can do wear long loose skirts similar to Sarong, but not ont of house or compound so much. More just to be comfortable inside in warm weather.

Wearing jeans in 40C humid weather is not my thing and I don't know how they do it. But this is a country where at the water parks girls will often wear jeans in the water and bring a spare pair to change. Older/middle age don't swim in public.

You do see middle aged women in longer shorts like walking around apartment complex early in morning but its rare and never a short skirt and good luck trying to buy one. When I used to on occasion wear a denim skirt that was knee length, you could see the guys all looking. They look anyway, but look more. I only used to wear to 5 star hotel or similar for meal, not shopping.

You will also notice no Indian girll worth her salt in middle class will wear flats. Most women wear a 2" sandel high heel.

Regards
Suzzie
