i am just coming off mercillion which i have been on for about 4 months and going onto marvelon because it is a higher dosage and less risk of pregnancy. i found on my last pill, that i had absolutely no side effects apart from my sex drive was completely dead and i just wasn't interested in doing anything which drove my boyfriend mad!! i tend to get really really sore boobs when coming on my 7 day break, does anybody else find this? and is marvelon going to make them worse does anybody know?

Hi I was originally taken off Dianette (had been taking it for 6 years) 3 years ago by my doctor due to painful cramps and spotting and put on Marvelon. I never really had any problems, or so I thought as I attributed everything to my IBS - painful cramps, headaches etc, but reading these posts has highlighted my problems - practically no sex drive, putting on weight, sensitive/touchy about things. Since coming off Marvelon I initially felt fantastic, my libido totally changed and I felt really great however I've been off it 3 months now and things have taken a nose dive, low libido again, painful breasts, no period and generally irritable and moody and crying all the time, was starting to think I was going crazy but after reading all of this am thinking that maybe it is something to do with the Marvelon and like a lot of people have said, I've been on the pill for 11 years, it can't just take 24 hours for it to get out of your system? Also my skin is awful!!! Has anyone else had these problems???

13 years on the pill, bar just over a year off in the middle... I have some concerns...

I was on Dianette for 6 years from age 15 to 21, due to mild acne, heavy periods and short cycles of 3 weeks. (I thought) I was very happy on it - I think it's difficult to tell whether a pill is causing mood swings/ weight gain etc when you are a) on it for a long time and therefore have nothing to compare it to and b) start so very young.
I decided to come off it at 21 as I was single and thought perhaps things would have regulated as I was no longer a teenager. Within 6 months I got terrible acne/cyst like spots and was back to a short cycle - it was so upsetting, as my skin was scarring. I tried topical treatments and anti-biotics and none of it works. After almost a year of this, I decided to go on RoAccutane - it is amazing. Works a treat and although people talk of risks of depression etc - I truly believe it's the best thing out there. Age 23, I had clear skin (bar fading old scars) and was on top of the world... met a guy, and had to go back on the pill.
So I was put on Marvelon - a happy medium I was told that would be kind to my skin. I have been on this for 5 years now and at 28, I would like to try to conceive. I am approaching the end of my pill pack and will stop... but I am scared.
a) can't decide whether to start ttc straight away (i.e. before first "natural" period), wait 1 month - or 3 months. I have heard it's easier to get pregnant in the first month as your levels are higher, but that also chance of miscarriage is higher - so hard to know what to do??? Any experience of pregnancy in first month?
b) worried about my skin. RoAccutane is very dangerous if pregnant and although it's amazing to have a baby - I don't want my skin to errupt while trying etc. Any advice? Anyone experience this after coming off Marvelon but trying for a baby?

Hi ladies... :?

Im very confused! I don't see how several of the commenters in this post can relate decrease in libido or weight gain or mood swings directly to the Marvelon pill. Surely they are more social inflicted symptoms and that you have to take that in to consideration? I can never see myself losing my sex drive, I am in love with my partner and therefore sex is a big part of our relationship and we do it for eachother. When it comes to weight gain, surely an increase in appetite has been the cause of this?

After 2 years of irregular and prolonged bleeding with Implanon (causing a great deal of stress to both me and my partner!), my doctor prescribed me with Marvelon. I have experienced some nausea but how can you be 100% sure that its the pill that is causing it?

I took Marvelon for 4 days, then I experienced similar symptoms to Thrush but I am also not sure whether this was because of Marvelon or because of sex. I was off Marvelon for 7 days and I am now on a very heavy and painful period. I have considered taking a pill to stop the bleeding, but I am not sure whether this is healthy.

I really am at a loss with what to do :( any opinions or thoughts would be recieved gratefully

Hi, Im 18 Years old and have been taking marvelon for nearly 2 years now.
I dont have any problems with it whatsoever, i think it may have aided a little weight gain, but that is all.

However i have a problem at the moment which i would like some advice from, I last took a pill on friday around 12pm, and missed saturdays pill, then took 2 together at 2pm on sunday. I didnt have a break from the last packet as im going on holiday so didnt want the withdrawal bleed, and the missed pill is the third pill in this packet. I had sex within the missed pill time, without using condoms, but pulling out. Im very confused whether i should do anything else or not? With me going on holiday i will not be having sex for at least the next 10 days.

Thanks ladies for all your comments. I'm strangley pleased that its not just me who has experienced weight gain & mood swings whilst being on this pill. I've only been on it for about 2 months & have already oput on a stone in weight & had to take time off work for depression!! I've decided to quit as its making me so unwell.

I've tried the injection & the patches & all work well, but seem to have noticeable side affects, such as lack of sex drive. Seems a bit pointless taking contraception if I can't bare my Boyf even looking at me! You would have thought after all these years, Medical Science would have moved much further forward. Oh well...

My 16 year old daughter has been taking Marvelon for the 6 months and has been having blinding headaches, 2 per day and also a feeling she describes as being emotionally hollow inside. We have been to the doctors twice, once they said to drink more water, less caffine etc and also to try a break from the pill and to get eyes tested which we did and has 20/20 vision.

She tried a break from the marvelon pill for 1 month it made a slight difference but didnt eradiate them, do you think a longer period of absence from the pill is needed to expele the hormone completely from your body?

She has been prone to headaches maybe one a month or fortnight but now twice a day is excessive.

This is affecting her school work and im almost positive it's the pill.

Just wondering if anyone else had the same problems as me as its really getting me down...

Back in january I got all the signs of thrush, itchyness, horrible discharge and just genrally a lot of discomfort. This has happened every month since, however, I only get these symptoms 10-7 days before my period. I come on, and then it goes.

I was on Microgynon 30 for years, came off it and went back on, since around the time I went back on it, I've ben getting these symptoms, I'm now on Marvelon, I'm only in the first week of taking it and I still have this problem.

Anyone else had this or have any other ideas? I've been tested for thrush, STD's and unusual bacteria- all negitive.

Thanks, please reply if you can help, its been going on for 5 months now..

I've been taking Marvelon for about 4 months now, everything was going great! Except I would get horrible cramps, but just recently I had sex. It had been awhile and after that I noticed I've been spotting for about a week. Is this normal? What are your thought/tips?
Thanks!

I've been using it for a little over a year and had absolutely no problems with it.

yes, my chest size has grown, but that's only been in the past few months so i cant say its because of the pill. and yes, i have put on weight in the past year - especially over the summer when i also happened to be taking it for 3 months non-stop - but i've also done less exercise and eaten more over that period so, again, i cant say that marvelon had anything to do with it.

I have to say that, yes my sex drive has gone down in relation to what it is when im not taking it.. but not by much and the little it has done im actaully happy about. =P
Its also done wonders to my mood swings, and, in connection, to my patience levels, which im sure the people around me appreciate greatly!

ps. i've been exercising and keeping an eye on my food intake recently and have lost some weight so...

Re: Marvelon???

Postby guest nurse » Wed Nov 24, 2010 4:37 am

I was on Yaz and Yasmine for a bit, got a lot of breakthrough bleeds, sore breasts, very bad menstrual cramps. I also experienced my very first urinary tract infections, but I don't know ìf it's related. I stayed on Yaz because I tend to gain weight on the pill, and not with this one. Finally decided to switch.
I'm now on Marvelon, and I gained at least 5 pounds in 1 month. II never had a potbelly before!!! I read all those comments about cup size. I wish it was me!!! I also think that the weight I gain is mostly water retention, and I lose most of it during my period, when i'm off Marvelon for a few days. But no cramps, no heavy bleed or spotting. For the sexdrive, all the pills kind of kills my libido a bit.
I had lots of thrush-like symptoms before, until I stopped using fabric softener when I wash my underwear. Now, even the unscented laundry soap gives me irritation and makes me itchy, so I only use sodium bicarb powder to wash. You can try an unscented soap when you shower as well.
But yes, the pill does change your vaginal Ph, so you may be more prone to infections and irritations. Also, make sure you urinate and clean yourself up after intercourse, it helps to prevent irritations and urinary tract infections.

Any very bad adverse effect should be notified to your doctor. And if he tells you that you have to wait three months for your body to adjust, go see someone else. Seriously. Non-menstrual very bad migraines, heavy bleed for more then a week, depression should be reported right away. Any side effect that makes you feel miserable is a good reason to switch, even it it has not been three months.

There is no right answer with the pill, because our bodies are different, therefore reacts differently to medication. Our body also goes through a lot of changes as we get older, and the pill that works well now might mot work in a few years. We just have to try a few and find THE one that isn't too bad...for now! :D

I'm 27 and been on Marvelon for 10 years, and from personal experience I have never had any issues at all with this pill. I'm not 100% why I was given this type of pill as my periods were always regular and relatively pain free, but I have found that my five day period with occasional cramping early on went down to a very light 3-4 day period with hardly any pain whatsoever. I've always been very happy and reluctant to try anything else. My sister has changed pills several times (not tried marvelon) because of mood swings etc. so I personaly thing it's just a matter of finding a pill that suits you, and i got lucky with Marvelon. My friend who is a family planning nurse tell me that you should allow your body three months to adjust to a new contraceptive pill, but if you're really not happy definitely speak to your GP / nurse as there will be different options. Also as for weight gain and skin problems, I think you should expect some chnages when you introduce your body to hormones. I didn't noticed anything myself, but I am quite good about eating a balanced diet, having the right vitamins and having a good skin regime, so I may have adjusted to any subtle changes without realising. I do notice that I retain a bit more water if I run a two packets back to back, but I consider this normal.
