Out of all the woman I know, which must be a couple of hundred with work colleagues, family and acquaintances, I don't know anyone who gets their hair set on rollers let alone know of whole salons full of them.

It's just me and the stylist when I get a perm. I have had perms in busy salons but I didn't enjoy it. Sitting there with foam rolls sticking out of your head isn't the best of looks.

Curly Candy is absolutely right, it's not about how busy the salon is that enhances the experience but how well your personality fits into the culture of the salon. I have been to a lot of salons to have my hair permed and set, some I felt totally comfortable in and others where I felt like a fish out of water.

Over the years I have traveled to salons as far as sixty miles from home searching for that elusive salon where I felt at home only to find in the end that it was less then ten minutes from my door. A small salon with six stylists, one esthetician (who I love) and two nail technicians. Sometimes the shop is buzzing and other times rather slow, but no matter what the traffic my beautician and the staff there always makes me feel like I am one of their most important clients. From the moment I enter through those glass doors to the time exit through them I feel like a regular.

I guess it's true everybody does need a place where everyone knows your name.

I decided to not get the perm this time. I got a short cut. First time in 4 years. I have to say I hate it. It's only been a couple of weeks; however, just looks so boring. I do the perm thing simply for control. I think it looks better than just stick straight and flat to my head.
I am not into the salon thing, and actually am not even comfortable in the salon even after so many perms. The roller set thing would do nothing for me also. I am just a straight married guy that hates straight hair. Guess its time to let it grow to a few inches again..........

Louise P, I must say I love the way you think!!!! I am a guy a single guy that iss very manly but love his femm side to. I find it hard to find a woman that would like this in a man. I to had a perm at age of 20 and loved it. I think its just wounderful you like trying new things on a man.I would let my woman do anything she wanted to me as long as it made her happy.

I can't wait to be back in a job and let hair get longer, this will will put me in a position to have another Wash & Set on Perm Rods at a Lady's Hair Salon run by 2 sister's who know exactly how I feel. They even encorage me to dress :girl:y for my appointments :D (I still can't get the courage together to have a PERM which something at present I just dream about) reason is explination to family and relatives, work friends, etc :(

I felt the same way as you. I thought there would be all kinds of harassment when I got a perm. I finally worked up the courage with the influence of my wife, and did it. I can honestly say that nobody ever gave me any kind of grief what so ever. I hardly received any comments at all period. The few that I did were nothing but positive. I initially thought people would think its a joke. Not the case.
Anyhow, personally, I think that it is far more rare to get a set than a perm. I have never seen a guy getting a set in a salon. I have seen guys getting perms though. I think that more people may poke fun at you if they knew you were getting sets rather than perms. Just an opinion........... I think you should try a perm soon instead.........

The reason I have sets on occassion are because they wash out :( I dont know if I have mentioned in the past I travel out of my area to have this done so no one who knows me will see me can poke fun, I dont care about people I dont known they are welcome to stare, at a man dressed as a lady and having his hair put in rollers it is such a thrill for me to have this done, plus I dont mind sitting their for the time it takes the ladies to roller set my hair and then sit under a dryer. The sisters in the Salon certainly know how to treat me. They keep me in the Salon for long periods, Gint I wish I had a Wife things would be quite different, I would make my wishes known to her and would not object to her taking to to a Ladies Salon for a Perm, but as I am single at the age of 54, I dont think I could get away with a perm as much as I would love one :girl: Could I have your feed back Gint or ANYONE please. :thankyou: :?: :D
I live with my parents we are very close knit, they are too old to understand perms on men, they are from another generation and are in their 80's, they don't even know I crossdress I do this if there go away for long weekend or on holiday. All relatives are very close too, I get so frustrated not being able to be who I want to, it means leading a double life this is so trying.

I don't mean to be too harsh; however, I don't know what to say. This discussion about perms on men is supposed to be about achieving a certain style that suits men individually. I think this whole thing has gotten off track with crossdressing and setting hair etc. I personally don't see the big deal in having your hair styled differently than others. If it looks better on you, and you like it, thats all that should matter. Now on the other hand, if you come home to mom and dad with a tight curly perm, pierced ears, high heels and a dress on, they probably would freak out. I am not into that kind of thing, nor will I ever be into that kind of thing, so therefore I cannot say anything more about it. We are talking about two totally different things here.
I guess my only advice is to do what makes you comfortable. Sounds like you want more than a perm though.......
Don't know if thats possible for you or not.........

BTW, my stylist originally suggested I get a perm because my hair is soooo straight and comes forward. I then told my wife that she suggested I try a perm, and my wife agreed. I always go by myself at a time when the salon is not busy to get perms. The ladies salon thing isn't my gig, I just like the final results of my hair........

setme wrote:I am so jealous of your Wash & Set tony 876 I do hope all goes well for you this coming Thursday 12th @ 13.15 I will be thinking about your appt wishing it was me, even though I have a bald spot on top when hair is long enough again (back & sides) only :( , as it grows very slowly I will go for it again. For the same treatment and be rolled on the smallest perm rods (brick red) I will be going back to the same Salon as before as they now what I like, rods to be tight plus the fact the sisters there are most willing to help me and dont mind me dressing for my appointments I think I will take it I two steps further next time I will not only wear ladies clothes but will wear make as well, and after she has rolled my hair, of course I will wear a hair net but the second new venture will be for me to leave the Salon with a scarf covering for my hair net, I will let hair dry naturally whilst I go round London.
Ps It sounds as if you have the same setting lotion as me it’s called Lady Set a green liquid Extra Firm Hold by Wella
Tony876 please post as to how you get on I would like to now?
Get your nails painted as well it is so good it makes you feel complete for the day

Gotta grow some balls, setme, and stand on your own two feet. You're 54 and should be pleasing yourself by now and fudge to anyone who disagrees. Sure, you got to be careful with elderly parents but I doubt they'll really give a stuff. I mean this with all good intentions, no offense meant. But you'll never achieve peace with yourself all the while you're worrying about what others think.

Curly Candy,
In an earlier post you mentioned going much curlier for yourself. Did you ever do it? Any photos of the hair?

Morning,

No, not yet. It's almost three years since my last perm so I'm ready for another one. I'm thinking a few days before the Christmas break is the best time, give it time to settle and for me to get used to it before going back to work.

Very much looking forward to it.

Is your hair long? Will you get a spiral perm that is tight or just regular? I read somewhere lately that spiral
perms for women are coming back......... I think they're nice looking......
