laptop crashing

Hi

I have an old laptop that i use mainly for net browsing and college work. Up until i installed a new programme it worked fine, but since the installation it started to crash and automatically start back up about 3 times an hour.

I deleted the programme but that didnt help, i took it to a local pc shop and they said hardware is fine its a windows problem but they couldnt find what it was.

My geeky friends brother got me to install a programme callex teamviewer and he tried and failed to fix it _.. Is there anyone on here who can help me? Or is it time for the bin?

Oh and please keep it simple lol i know how to turn on laptop and surf but not much else lol

simple....
get a friend or classmate who is good with computers to backup your information and then reinstall windows for you.
You could also get the computer store to do this for you.

Thanks but i was hoping to do fix it without having to resort to that.. Plus i never made any restore disks for laptop

If you don't manage to fix it, before you finally put it in the bin try installing Linux instead of or alongside Windows. If maleware has got on your system (presumably you have done a full scan with an up to date antivirus program) it wont affect Linux. As you have geeky friends it might be an idea to get one of them to help you, as Linux on early laptops could sometimes be problematic.

As a Linux newbie I would recommend Linux Mint, it will run both as an install and directly from your CD drive so you can try it out before installing it. You need Bios to be set to boot from CD before your hard disk but your geeky friend will know how to do that, then just put the CD in your CD drive and reboot. Don't bother with trying to download it yourself and creating an iso image, just buy a CD. There are usually one or two good Linux people on eBay who will sell you a CD for a pound or so, just to cover the cost of the disk and postage. See:

if only it was so simple lol.. I threw the disc away, i didn't think i'd need it lol.

My geeky friends brother nearly fixed it but he kept losing his teamviewer connection or something

Am I right in guessing that this is Windows XP ( better be XP service pack 3 - the ONLY supported version of xp )

do you still have the authentication KEY on the sticker on the bottom of the computer ( a copy of it would also have been on the case for the reinstall cd )
a bright orange sticker .

if you do you can get a cd still from MS but only xp sp3 FOR FREE but you MUST have the authentication KEY to activate it
otherwise
"Windows Genuine ( DIS)Advantage" will stop you

if this was the OLD and unsupported xp service pack 2 and you try to "fix" it by doing the NORMAL very first thing
" restore to factory condition " -- you can NOT. That will KILL it even more - it is a KNOWN ms problem ( microsoft did it to it - they F'ed up big time )

so the installed program that you uninstalled
what was it ?
99% of the time a windows program will NOT 100% fully be removed
they tend to leave a LOT of system registry keys set. Ones that will need to be manually removed
( good old "regedit" )

that OR a virus ???????
