Fashion - Should clothes be age appropriate?

Postby cyndylessing » Mon Mar 29, 2010 4:39 pm

I am an image consultant and I am often asked about the importance of wearing clothes that are age-appropriate.

Though there is a truth to this, I believe that any woman, any age can look fabulous and sexy in her clothes if she wants to without ever looking frumpy or worse, like mutton dressed as lamb.

I'd love to know your thoughts.

i say it makes no difference your age when it comes to wearing clothes. my wife is 56 and has a great body and can get away with wearing short skirts and 5-51/2 inch platform pumps and still looks great and very sexy. now if my wife wasnt in good shape then i would not recommend it. . to me it comes down to what shape your in rather than your age. i see 20 and 30 somethings girls that are not in good shape wearing tight mini skirts and its not a good site.

I dislike the entire term "age appropriate". As has been noted, who looks good in what often has little to do with age, and everything to do with the condition they are in and their self confidence. Besides, even if they don't meet society's definition of "perfect", who says they can't wear what they want and enjoy wearing it?

Well I think age is not as important as your body structure. Whatever may be your age select the clothes which are suitable to your body type. Now-a-days Women Clothing has shown enormous improvement and one can find clothes for any size. So, selecting the appropriate clothes as per your body type is important and apart from this you should also be able to carry off that dress pretty well.

I would agree. It is very much about how it looks on you.

I think if you look good and feel good you should wear them regardless of your age.

As Image Consultants one of the questionns we hear the most is "Can I wear that at my age?" The answer is, yes if you follow some simple rules. Another is "I wore it the first time around". Well....we have all worn worn something the first time around but that dosn't mean that you can't wear it again. The only difference is that you'll be wearing it differently this time around.

Fashion is ageless it just depends how much flesh you flash. Let's use leggings as an example. A younger woman may want to show off more legs however as you get older it's more sophisticated to show less. The same can be said for arm flesh, with age we tend to like to show less. If you can carry it off, wear it. But remember you want people to look and think "she looks stylish" and not "she should cover up".

Look good, feel great!

Definitely not. Both girls and women should be allowed to wear whatever they wish without rules or judgement.

Should clothes be age appropriate? No!

I believe that everyone should wear as much of, or little of whatever they want to. It's what they are comfortable with that's important. Sod all these 'fashion police' people trying to force what they want us to wear.
We should not judge people choice of clothes, even if they do look stupid.

I look at it like this. I have NO interest in seeing a grown woman in a "My Little Pony" romper, or dora the explorer jammies. Nor do I want to see little girls in miniskirts and suggestive attire meant for grown women. I think there are age limits for certain kind of garments. I think the fashion industry today is blurring the boundaries of common sense when it comes to the garments they create for little girls and young teens. Does the show "Toddlers and Tiaras" make you ill? Or how about fashion shows and little Jon Benet Ramsay(sp)?

Sorry, I might be a stick in the mud, but I still see the lines in the sand, and when they are crossed, I call the encroaching tw@t out on it.

You could probably still shop at hollister, you just have to pick differently. Jane Norman and H&M are both decent stores, or _ you have sites like boohoo and laredoute. There's a lot of choice out there really.

As for the question, I think as you age you should dress appropriately, which doesn't mean you need to start dressing in below the knee elasticated skirts and granny blouses, you can still wear clothes that show off a figure, it's just some items should be left behind at certain age brackets.
I like to tell people I have the heart of a small boy. Then I say it's in a jar on my desk.

Its all depends on your body shape and size. Without looking at age if you wear short dress like a young girl, no one figure out your real age....................
