Firefox stalling.

Postby DanMc » Mon May 23, 2011 8:54 pm

Is anyone else having this problem at the moment? Virtually every web page I try to load takes around 5-30 seconds to load and sometimes loads incompletely, needing to be reloaded. I'm using Firefox 3.6.17 for Linux. I'm running Opera tonight as it's getting on my tits.

The OS is Mint 9.
DHCP is on.
The output of "cat /etc/resolv.conf" is 192.169.0.1, but that's just the IP of my router, a Netgear DG834 v4 wired via Ethernet.
I have disabled IPv6 which helps a little and also disabled Stylish 1.0.7. Oddly I don't remember downloading that in the first place.
"network.dns.disableIPv6" is now set to true.

As an experiment I have changed "network.http.pipelining" to True and increased "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" from 4 to 20. Does this sound a good idea to you?

I suspect it's a Firefox update problem though, because it only started when I last did an update. I update from Mint updates, rather than directly from Mozilla.

it sounds like you are doing things right , and not a "new to linux" user
using the standard "speed up FF3 " settings

I am guessing that NetwrokManager( not the older "Network") service is set to grab dns FROM the dhcp look up and use YOUR isp's dns
try unsetting that and use Googles 8.8.8.8

that may or may not help

time outs like this can be "fun" to debug
I know MY isp dose loose some packets in a "blackhole" after a short TTL ( for others reading " Time To Live" google it )

you might want to run traceroute and map from you to a local google node
that might shed some light on this .

Clearing the cache seems to help too. I'm not seeing "stopped" or "waiting for site name" in the status bar so often.

:) clearing the cache, cleaning temp files, running CCleaner, defragmenting the disk usually solves 85% of the problems :D (Having a fast internet connection also helps ;))

I don't need to use Ccleaner or defrag the hard disc as I'm running Linux, but on Windows I agree with you. My connection is 8mb nominal and in practice I get around 5.5, so that's not the problem. I still suspect that the current version of Firefox for Mint/Ubuntu is a bit dodgy.

defrag and Linux ????
well one ? could ? but why

a bit back for "grins and giggles " i did on an old ext2 drive
after 5 years on use ( this was the percent) 0.01%
ok one or two files
an a quick fix
copy/paste

now MS windows
an educated guess on ntfs
1 week use
45 % fragmentation

FF has a setting for auto dumping the cache on shutdown so you will not have to do that by hand

I've always thought that the problems I was having were caused by updates to Firefox 3.6, which until recently was still the recommended version for Linux Mint 9. Then suddenly an update to Firefox 10 has appeared, which I have now installed. What a difference! It's just so much faster, although I believe the improvements started with Firefox 9, memory and CPU use are no longer maxed-out every few seconds and it's a joy to use.

There are a few irritations, the tab bar is on top like in Opera by default, but unlike Opera it's easy to move it to where it was and the reload button is now at the right-hand-side of the address bar which drives me nuts right now, but I'll get used to it in a few days.

I was seriously thinking about replacing my ancient computer, but right now it runs so well I'm going to hang on to it for a bit longer.
