I need your help, I have questions

Postby Guest » Thu Sep 30, 2004 10:38 pm

My brother and his wife just have a baby last August but they are still keep their baby away from people trying to touch a baby. They are still doing until now! My sister and Dad were heartbroken because my sister-in-law doesn't let us to touch my nephew then she keeps wiping off his hands with baby's wet cloth. Is this crazy or what? :? She yelled at me last week ago and said 'dont' touch!!' then I felt pretty down.... Is it good idea if the baby have to stay off germs for long time? Please tell what's your opinion and I need your help!

That's complete nonsense. Obviously you dont handlea yopung baby if your hands and clothes are really clean, but the child must build up natural immunity to infection - providing of course that the child is healthy in the first place. At what age would your brother and his wife allow other people to handle the child ? One, two five ? However, it is the parents decision and if your sister-in-law yells at you, the you need to accept that. The other factor though is that if the baby doesn't get used to being handled at an early age, he could easily develop a complete aversion to people he doesn't know later on, and that's not good for overall development. You need to respect the parents wishes first and foremost. After all, he is their child.

It's essentially their problem, but it would be apity if you were to cut yourself off from your brother's children because of that. You're a close relative and should be there for them growing up. Perhaps it's just that your sister in law is being over-possessive with her new baby and is uncomfortable with someone else handling him. Try and make allowances and she'll come round in a while.

Hey, I'm back. I haven't seen my nephew so long time since Christmas! OK, my brother came to stop by my house by himself and he told me the truth. I was pretty shocked that he said he was complaining about my sister-in-law's overprotective baby. My guess is he stopped touching the baby when she said "no, don't touch." I caught him in his eyes and he seems so mad. This is crazy - why did not she allows him to touch the baby? :? What should I do?

I think that your sister in law maybe suffering from OCD or it could be even post natal depression and is just concerned about the welfare of her children.

Instead of thinking that she is mad, why not ask her how she is feeling? Speak to your brother and maybe he can speak to the GP or the Health Visitor.

It does sound as if she has a problem and needs help.
