I don't suppose sitting through a perm is all that bad, I did have my hair permed in the early nineties but my hair was difficult to perm and the process took nearly 3 hours in all so I decided that permed hair was not for me. However don't let me put you off having your hair permed, afterall Like Louis Jamie says he liked having his perms done. I have to say Jamie looks really happy in all the photos his Mum showed of him having his perms. This is dispite Jamie recalling that his home perms were often uncomfortable, due mainly to the fact that his Mum didn't have a protective gown which meant he wore just a towel round his neck and a plastic apron pulled right up under his chin. Jamie said the towel would get damp due to the dripping perm solution and the apron neck string would dig into his neck after a hour or so. Jamie said it was great when he first went to the hairdressers because they had a proper waterproof plastic gown which he had to wear.
I really don't know what size rods you should have put in I think it depends on what final style you are trying to acheive. I know that Jamie had pink rods put in as a child. This time Sandra our hairdresser said she would probably use pink and blue rods for Jamie's hair which will give Jamies hair quite a tight curl to start with but it will relax a bit after a week or so and also if he has highlights put in after the perm this also can relax the perm

Louise, Thanks for the response. I guess I'll just leave it up to the stylist. It sounds though like we have very similar hair and want to achieve the same type of look. Let me know when he is doing this and the results. You said that you havn't had a perm since the early 90's, do you think it could have just been a bad experience at that time? Now that Jamie has decided to get a perm doesn't it make you kind of want to also? Would you consider it again? Maybe this would help support him. The only reason I ask is because I think curly hair on women is really cool. I personally prefer it by far on women. Did you ever ask Jamie what his thoughts are about you being permed again in the near future?

I have been considering the possibility of trying a perm again but the thought of sitting under dryer for a couple of hours puts me off a little bit.
When do you think you will be going for your perm?
Jamie is quite excited at the prospect of being permed again he has seen the style he wants in a hair magazine and he called in at the hair salon on his way home from work yesterday to show Sandra. While he was there Sandra did a strand test so she could assess what strength of solution would be needed. Sandra has booked a preliminary 4 hour appointment for Jamies perm on 30th September at 1.00pm. Jamie was a bit suprised at the length of the appointment but Sandra explained that she allowed 1/2 hour for welcome and wash, 1/2 hour for putting the curlers in and preparation to go under the dryer, 1 1/2 hours curing time under dryer, 1/2 hour to fix the perm, rinse and remove curlers and 1 hour to hot oil condition and finally style. Sandra said it may not take this long but they like to allow this amount time so that they do not fall behind with their appointments. Anyway Jamie said however long it takes he is having it done.
If his hair is permed on the 30th that would be just in time for his birthday which is on the 1st October. Seeing as he doesn't know what he wants for his birthday, his perm can be his present. When I have asked him what he wants for his birthday he just says that he needs a new pinny for cooking, easily pleased hey. I think I will buy him a new pair of earrings to compliment his curly hair, I was thinking of a pair of small hoops for change rather than the studs which he normally wears, then of coarse I will have to get him his new pinny.

Louise, Pardon my asking, but what the hell is a pinny? That perm process sounds a little sophisticated. My stylist told me that with my length hair to plan 1.5 hours. Hopefully he doesn't get turned off by the length of time this takes. You should consider the perm anyhow, think about it, if Jamie can sit there for 4 hours and not have a problem with it, maybe you could too! It may be relaxing for you and the result would be worth it being female. Let me know your thoughts. Sounds like Jamie is really getting into this whole perm thing.

Pinny is a childish word for an apron. Jamie's hobby is cooking and he likes to wear a PVC apron while cooking.
I was also a bit suprised when Jamie told me that he had 4 hour appointment booked however 1.5 hours sounds really quick for a perm your stylist must have fast fingers. Jamie is not put off by the length of time it might take to do the perm.
As for me, I have looking through a few hair magazines looking for a curly style that i like but i havn't really found one yet.

Louse, Thanks again for responding. I just never heard the term pinny before, now I feel stupid. By the way I made an appointment for the perm on Sept. 20. I hope it works out. Let me know when you make a decision on your perm. My wife is getting hers done a week before mine.

20th Sept hey, not long for you to wait then, are you looking forward to having it done or are you apprehensive about it?
Jamie's mother has just called to see me so I asked her how long it took her to perm Jamie when she did it. She thought it took at least 2 hours when she did it at home and a bit longer at the hairdressers. His Mum said Jamie's hair is very resistant to the perm solution so the majority of the time was spent under the dryer waiting for the perm solution to work.
Have you thought about having anything else done to enhance your new look, some highlights or lowlights in your hair perhaps, maybe a pair of earrings would suit you.

Louise, Yes it is coming up fast. I am a little scared about what other people will think. I would say that I am not in the least bit feminine and I hope this doesn't put me into that category. In addition I don't no how it will turn out.
In the past I have thought about an earing in my left ear however my wife isn't to keen on that whole idea. I don't think she would care either way but it doesn't seem to do anything for her. The perm thing is probably enough for me to handle at this time. There is something about piercings that I like though because with my suggestion, my wife has her belly button, nipples and cartilage pierced. HOT!! I may down the road consider highlights because I think they look good too. Once again, I am not a feminine type of guy, and I don't want to be too drastic with my appearance, I just want to try something different as my hair is soooo stick straight. It just falls towards my eyes.
Do you have any piercings and does Jamie have any others? What are your thoughts on that whole idea? Have you scheduled your perm yet?

i am 15 year old guy and might be getting a body wave soon. My cousin told me this is the same as a perm. is that right? I feel kinda nervous, but my mom's stylist will be doing it and she has been cutting my hair for about one year now and letting it grow longer. I am most worried about being seen by other girls and guys I know. But I am kinda curious too to see how it will look.

yes a body wave is just a loose perm. She will use larger rods to curl it. I t should just add a little wave to your hair so you can comb it back etc. Give it a try, you'll probably like it.

Using small pink perm rods for my 5-6" hair length from forehead to bak of neck. Forget color used on sides for tight sexy curls.

stylist says my face shape is prfect for this look. cant wait to perm today!

You shouldn't be scared what other people think, so long as you are happy with your decision have a perm then that is all that matters.
Jamie's attitudes were similar to yours when Jamie and I first met, that is the main reason why it took quite a long time to convince him to wear earrings. In the end I bought him a magnetic stud from Claires where I work and got him to wear it for work just to prove to him that it would be OK, which of coarse it was. A week or so after that he agreed to come to work with me one Saturday morning so I could pierce his ear before the shop got busy. Unluckily for Jamie the shop was busy from the moment I opened up so Jamie had 3 or 4 on lookers as he sat in the chair waiting. I put on my apron and gloves and marked up both his ears, he quietly said asked why I was marking both ears I said the studs come in pairs so I think its best I do both. Jamie didn't say any more, he just sat there looking embarrassed and nervous as I put the studs in his ears. Couple of minutes later Jamie is all done and sat there with a nice gold ball stud in each of his rather red ear lobes. Now it is very rare I see him without a pair of studs in his ears.
It was the same situation when I asked him to have highlights in his hair, he was very nervous about the process and he was concearned about somebody who knows him seeing him having it done. He always asks the colourist for a chair away from the window so no one can see him wearing the rubber highlighting bonnet.
The other day I asked him whether he had asked for a chair away from the window for when he has his perm and he said that he wasn't bothered about people seeing him having his perm done.
We are not into body piercing, i have my lobes triple pierced nothing else.
I have found a curly style that I want and I have been to see Sandra to arrange to have it done. Sandra did a strand test and has booked me in to have permed tomorrow evening as some one had just cancelled.

I was sooooo scared when I had my first set done as a teenager, that someone I knew would see me with it or getting it done. That's why I was at the salon five minutes after they opened. I was ok with my family and close friends seeing my curls, just felt wierd about acqaintances & co-workers.

When I started trying them again a few years ago, when I was serious about having a perm, I always hoped that I'd get the beauty chair closest to the window or closest to the store entrance in the mall as well as the dryers too. I was happy for people to see a guy getting perm rods wrapped in his hair & going really curly. I was tired of hiding the fact from everyone that I wanted a perm. When I luckily got a beauty chair and dryer that were well visible to the mall customers or people on the sidewalk, it helped me to deal with them seeing me getting it done & got more confident about the end result.

After trying the last few with different rod sizes and hair lengths, I'd always walk the whole mall or shopping center afterwards to show off my curls. I'd park a long ways in the parking lot so more people could see my curls as i walked to the car. The last salon was in a mall with nothing but glass as it's walls. It felt realy cool for everyone to see me!

i enjoyed doing some shopping in the stores & malls and pumping gas next to the busy hiway to show off my new sexy look. I stopped at several other stores to do business, even buying an afro pick! to get more confident of people seeing me in curls. Some ot these people I knew.

I know everyone doesn't feel this bold & that's ok. But at least you're getting it done!
