I was interested to read the letter about a week ago about air hostesses wetting themselves. I was a stewardess for 12 years and remember two emergency landings. If it is any help, the French seem to have a solution to this problem. They simply open both doors of the car and squat on the cill. Most French women don't seem unduly worried but if caught in a trafic jam on the M25 (or any other mororway), and if you are in either the inner or outer lane, this could be a solution. For those of you who are against using diapers or pads in case of an emergency (even if you know you'll be on a highway that's usually congested or has lots of accidents), have you considered that there are people who have urinary problems? (Not all of them have this problem checked by a doctor, either, for whatever reason.)
Sammii, have you considered that not everyone can hold their urine for three hours? I used to be able to but not anymore. Waiting too long on a somewhat regular basis can be damaging. It's amazing how many kids my neices' and nephews' ages won't use the restroom at school. Either they don't know what kind of trouble they can cause themselves, or they don't care. If you're one of those people who has to go often and you know you'll be traveling, what can it possibly hurt to be prepared?

Okay - so some of the later replies have got a bit silly.
