Why do we wash bath towels? Aren't we clean when we use them?

We are clean but there is this thing called mildew and in a bathroom being that the air is moist and humid most of the time the towles dont get a chance to completely dry and then the towles start to stink. Plus think of all the dead skin that comes off when you dry off and that too can build up over time and thats just gross.
