As much as a direct statement as it is, I agree. Damn near every accident I've almost been in/seen has been caused by a woman. Yet men's insurance rates are higher, it boggles my mind :?

I guess its down to each of our experiences/friends experiences...

I've been driving for 8 yrs and never had an accident, or even brushed another car/wing mirror, and no, im not a pensioner - im 29! :)

However, my boyf has had about 3 car accidents, one pretty major one, one into a wall (it was a sad day when the BRG mini died...) and another where he rammed his Wolfrace alloys into a kerb! (no actually other cars involved in the wall or kerb ramming incidents however, thankfully)..

But Im sure others have the opposite experience! :)

Well I admit i'm not a very good driver.

I sometimes brush curbs..

.... I can't parallel park or even reverse park into a space. I always have to pull in forward and then I dither around when reversing out. If I can go straight through to another space, so I can pull straight out forward then it's a real bonus.

I rock back and forth on even the slightest hill ..I have terrible clutch control...cars behind me usually keep there distance.

Sometimes I dont notice other cars braking ahead of me to turn off.. and have to brake somewhat harder than is the norm.

..and I have a problem with traffic lights ..I avoid them if I can.

Not sure you could say it's because i'm a woman ..it's because i'm not a confident driver..(AKA..crap driver).

I'm sure there are some men out there exactly the same. :P

My personal opinion based on quite a few years driving, is that women are more prone to doing stupid stuff like not checking mirrors or not looking properly before pulling out and in this sense cause accidents.

But...

Men typically drive faster than women, are overconfident and are more aggressive when driving, which is worse. Thats why stats say women are safer, because they are.

So put an average female and male on a test track, my moneys on the bloke every time. On the public road, men are more dangerous.

Yes, some women can't drive, as some men can't. I must admit, I drive quite a lot and have shouted out :x 'no wonder people say women can't drive!' several (hundred) times. Please do not tar all women (i.e me!) with the same brush. I'm an excellent driver and I know it!

All this talk of "I'm a good driver" begs the question, What is a good driver?
Ive seen posts where folks say they are good drivers because they haven't had accidents. Does that mean a good river is simply one who doesn't hit anything?
Others say "I'm fastest". Is that as far as good driving goes?
Most people take the way they drive as a definition of a good driver. That way it's not surprising that they consider themselves good or even excelent.
So what is a good driver?

Right, a good driver is yes of course someone who doesn't hit anything. Someone who doesn't break the law i.e doing ridiculous speeds, running red lights, driving whilst talking on a mobile (the amount of people I still see doing that!). Someone who is experienced, someone who, when driving in their car, only concentrates on driving, someone who can handle their car and not swerve all over the road (I find tuesdays tend to be their worst day!) and someone who doesn't think they own the road.

Have I missed anything? :D

Quite a bit actually.

A GOOD driver apreciates that the speed limit is a limit and not something to drive at. To be really safe, a GOOD driver aims to drive between 1/2 to 3/4 of the speed limit. Of course, that's in perfect conditions. When it's dark or wet or if there's other traffic on the road, they reduce their speed further. They also reduce their speed if they have the added distraction of passengers in the car. They realise that to exceed the speed limit by even 1mph is so dangerous that serious injury or death is inevitable.

A GOOD driver is always aware that pedestrians may step out at any time so the best place to drive is as close to the centre of the road as possible.

A GOOD driver not only doesn't talk on their mobile phone but actually turns it off to avoid an incoming call distracting them.

A GOOD driver will never drive when the roads are deserted as this is a particularly dangerous time. If it wasn't then why aren't other people on the roads. No, the safest time is when the roads are as busy as possible. Not only does this reduce the speed of the traffic (traffic calming) because, as we all know, speed kills, but it also ensures that help is always available in the case of an accident.

Part of being a GOOD driver extends to their choice of a really safe car. The safest avialable are large 4x4's. These may not have good manoeverability or brakes but will protect the occupants in a crash by benefiting from the crumple zones built into smaller cars. These cars also have 4 wheel drive and can go off road. That is something a GOOD driver would never consider of course as there are no other cars there.

Of course a GOOD driver realises that they don't own the road but as they pay their road tax, they have every right to use it whenever they want.

The final part of being a GOOD driver is to realise that other drivers are far less able and so need telling regularly how to drive and behave on the road.

A driver can be a good driver yet have their mobile phone switched on. I do not get distracted by a call, I simply pull over when possible and call them back. Hearing a phone ringing is not distracting, no more than listening to the radio.

A good driver does not worry when driving if a road is deserted or not, the amount of times I've seen drivers not pull over for emergency service vehicles is unbelieveable, so on most deserted roads an emergency could be attended to quicker.

A good driver knows that they don't own the road. Yes they have a right to use it, not to cut people up intentionally, try and push their way in or try and squeeze past you when it's your right of way.

As for the last quote, I realise other people may not be as experienced as me or have the knowledge of driving like me, thats when I exercise my patience :)

The dangerous thing about a deserted road is the lack of other people to call the emergency services should an accident happen. The victim may not be capable of doing that.
