Maybe because partnerships now between two loving people - become possesive? I mean thhat a partner "owns" another so they are not free to share/enjoy their own sexuality?

I did this with my first wife as she was far more into sex than me. We never had a problem with it and it was a great turn-on. Sometimes I was present, sometimes not. She was always careful about her choice of partner. OK, not for everyone but great for some.
