The Book Thief

The story is set in 1939 Germany and centres on a little girl of nine called Liesel, who is living with her foster family on Himmel Street and spends her time stealing books. Her parents have been sent to a concentration camp. The book tells her story as well as her neighbours in the street as the war ensues.

Markus Zusak has won many prizes for children’s fiction and lives in Sydney Australia with his wife and daughter. In Australia, they regard him as a ‘literary phenomenon’ by his book critics and he won the Printz Honour for excellence in young adult literature in 2006.

His other works include; I Am the Messenger, Fighting Ruben Wolfe, Getting the Girls, Underdogs and Der Joker.
