So you want to give up the day job and become a full-time writer? Just enjoying the act of writing isn't enough. It requires organisation and dedication. Take a look at my ten tips for adjusting to life as a full-time author.

Everything to Lose

Everything to Lose

Keep to a schedule, as you would in any other job. It's easy to get carried away and spend all of your time writing - know when to stop.

Create an environment for yourself that will make you want to write. A separate office space is a must with a comfortable chair and good lighting.

Diversify. Develop your writing skills by writing blogs, articles or short stories. It will keep you from getting bored and expand your creativity.

Read books from all genres! It's a great way to learn from other writers.

Maintain contact with the outside world. It's too easy to become a hermit.

Don't feel guilty for taking time off. Even writers need a break!

Maintain a healthy lifestyle to keep your mind alert and your creativity flowing.

Learn to take on board constructive criticism. It will only improve your writing.

Network with other writers and readers. Not only to make contacts but also to feel a part of the writing community.

Build firm boundaries with family and friends. Working from home doesn't mean you are always available.
