When I saw the call for submissions from Totally Bound Publishing for what is now called the His Domain anthology, I knew I wanted to write something for it—but what? Although anthologies are great fun to write for, and having those deadlines gives me the kick up the backside I sometimes need, they can be very tricky. For example—you’ve got five or six authors all writing something on the same theme, and although five or six authors who had been given an exact story to write would still produce different stories because of their varying writing styles, readers don’t want to feel like they’re reading similar stories in the same book. Therefore I imagine the editor’s task is to ensure that the final stories that are chosen are very different from one another.

So I decided to try and make the editor’s life a bit easier. Or, at the very least, make my story different enough that it wouldn’t be discounted for being too similar to anyone else’s. So how could I take the theme of a sexy Dominant male with a playroom and twist it? After a couple of deep-in-thought showers and dog walks (they’re the times I think best), I had it. My imagination had kicked in.

I would make my male character unconventional (both in looks and personality), I would make the circumstances of his meeting the female character unconventional, and the male character’s playroom and toys would also be unconventional. Unsurprisingly, I even decided to call the story Unconventional. After a while, I started to wonder if I might have gone a bit too far, a bit too bonkers… after all, how many erotic romance stories do you know that reference Edward Scissorhands, and not in a characters-are-watching-the-movie sense, either? But I was having fun, so I stuck with it. And I’m really glad I did. The back stories of the two lead characters were interesting and felt very natural, and led very easily in to where they end up, and what they end up doing.

I don’t want to say too much more and end up giving the game away, but I’m really pleased with the end result. The characters, Penny and Maddox, despite their age difference (this is also a May to December/older man, younger woman story) and backgrounds, find quite a bit in common to bring them together. They also appreciate and embrace their differences—most importantly, Penny is a willing submissive to Maddox’s dominant, although, when she first sees his playroom, she begins to wonder what she’s letting herself in for.

Anyway, I really hope you’ll consider checking out Unconventional. If you like quirkiness in your erotic romance stories, then maybe this story will be for you.

Happy Reading!

Blurb:

Penny was caught out in the wrong place, at the wrong time. As a recently graduated law student, the brush with the law could put an end to her career before it’s even begun. But thanks to her lawyer daddy’s contacts, she’s been given a second chance. A chance to redeem herself and make her stupid behavior go away.

Which is how she ends up working in a soup kitchen, preparing and serving meals to those who are having a rough time of it. She’s not keen on the idea, and when she meets Maddox, the guy in charge, she’s even less keen. A tall, skinny, mad-haired, tattooed guy, Maddox is the sort of person Penny would normally cross the road to avoid. But once she gets to know him, she starts to see things differently. He’s had a checkered past himself, and has now put it behind him and enjoys a glittering, prosperous career as a top chef.

Maddox may have unconventional looks, but Penny quickly grows to like him, and, much to her surprise, finds herself attracted to him. He’s a lot older than her, and their lives are at completely different stages, but in spite of this, there’s an undeniable connection between them.

When Maddox makes Penny an unconventional offer, will she have the courage to take him up on it? And if she does, where will it lead?
