• France has always been a big part of my life. My mum taught French for many years, I speak the language and my godparents and several of my oldest and closest friends are French. Setting my novel in Paris has deepened what was already a pretty intense relationship. I love it more than ever!
  • I like fiction and drama that touch me emotionally. My favourite sad film is I've loved you so long, set in France, starring Kristin Scott Thomas. The Light Between Oceans by M L Stedman is one of the rare books that made me sob. Looking forward to the film, although Michael Fassbender might have something to do with that…
  • Like most authors, I write the kind of books I want to read, and there's definitely room for more which portray women over 40 (the age of my narrator, Alexandra) in an honest and realistic way. We shouldn't be invisible, and we read a lot! So far my 40s have been the best years of my life - I didn't start writing until was 41.
  • I don't shy away from sexuality as a topic because it's a fundamental and fascinating part of who we are. But actually every type of human connection interests me: family bonds, friendship, random encounters between strangers.
  • Although I love meeting new people, I find it daunting if I turn up to a party or book launch and can't see a familiar face. If I survive the first half hour I usually end up having a great time.
  • I rarely go to sleep before 11pm - more often midnight - and I am not a morning person. If I have to get up early, I can, but it's hard to get any sense out of me before 10am and a strong cup of coffee.
  • I grew up in rural Wiltshire but I've lived in London for 26 years. I thrive on the incredible energy and variety of big cities but at some point I'd like to live by the sea, a different source of inspiration. Northern California near the giant redwood forests would do nicely!
  • My idea of a perfect London day out with my husband is an art or photography exhibition, followed by lunch with a view and a long walk. The two of us used to do this on special occasions when our children were small and now they're older it happens a lot more often.
  • I wear whatever makes me feel good (apart from heels - I am five foot ten). Style isn't about age or size or budget - it's about confidence, imagination and knowing what suits you.
  • Books are my favourite topic of conversation, which is why I started the Literary Sofa five years ago. I love hearing what other people are reading and what they think of it. But be warned - If you ask me for a recommendation, you'll probably end up with ten.
