We're no merely hours away from Britney Spears highly-anticipated return to the MTV Video Music Awards this Sunday (28.08.16) - for her first performance at the ceremony in almost 10 years.

Britney Spears

The 90s pop princess stormed the charts back in 1999 when she put the 'cool' back into the school uniform - playing the role of a Catholic schoolgirl who strutted her stuff down the high school hallway wearing a short skirt, cropped white shirt and grey cardigan in the video for her debut single 'Baby One More Time'.

But while the video brings back memories for most of us, whether you're a self-confessed Britney fan or not, one thing we can't deny is at the time, this week's 16-year-old school-leavers weren't even born.

And who'd have thought that Britney's vision of a preppy chick in a pair of pink fluffy pigtails could 'knock-the-knee-socks-off' any other chart contenders to sell a whopping 500,000 copies on its first day alone before going on to top the Billboard charts for two consecutive weeks.

Today, it's sold more than 10 million copies - making it one of the best-selling singles of all time - but it's a far cry from what Britney, 34, has gone on to achieve, firmly carving out her own legacy in pop history.

Britney, who grew up in Kenwood, Louisiana, knows only too well how important it is to pull off a jaw-dropping performance at the MTV VMAs and the role it plays in making an artist memorable.

Teasing her upcoming appearance, she said: "The VMAs don't just give you a stage. They give you a story - some way of taking a fraction of a second and making it live forever. Before you know it, it's history. Before you know it, it's Britney, bitch!"

And while the set details of her performance at the ceremony held at New York's Madison Square Garden, will remain top secret until her performance on the night, we do know that Britney will perform her new single 'Make Me' from her brand new album 'Glory' - which has just dropped - and will be joined on stage by G-Eazy.

Renowned for her super-sexy routines - honed now during her acclaimed 'Piece of Me' Las Vegas residency - and as a trendsetter, she paved the way for artists using headset microphones. But as in previous years, it's her VMA outfit choice that will be the key to sending pulses and TV ratings racing on Sunday. Her nude '...Oops I Did It Again' glitter catsuit did just that in 2000 and the unconventional wedding dress she wore to perform in 2003.

And if her outfits aren't enough to turn heads, her on-stage antics are - remember when she carried a real snake on her shoulders during her 2001 performance of 'I'm a Slave 4 U' and who could forget when she kissed Madonna in the middle of performing a medley of hits on stage at the 2003 VMA's.

While her VMA 2016 outfit remains underwraps, this year Britney is auctioning it off to raise money for the victims of the floods in Louisiana.

But life in the spotlight has not always run smoothly for the blonde beauty. After taking time out in 2005 to start a family with her then husband Kevin Federline, Britney gave birth to sons Sean Preston and a year later her second son, Jayden James, was born.

Growing up in the public eye, having started her TV career on The Mickey Mouse Club aged 10, fame finally took its toll on the star. She suffered a very public breakdown in 2007 when she split from Kevin and erratically shaved her head in front of the paparazzi. As a result she lost custody of her sons and had a stint in rehab before getting back to health, being reunited with her sons and taking them on tour with her in 2009.

And it's not just her private life, her music suffered to. After her eighth studio album 'Britney Jean' flopped -becoming her lowest-peaking and lowest-selling album in the US and in the UK - in 2013 all eyes were on Britney as she re-launched herself with 'Britney: Piece of Me' - a 50-date-a-year residency in Las Vegas, playing to crowds at The Axis auditorium, located in the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino.

Proving all the haters wrong, she had sell-out shows throughout 2014, 2015, and extended her contract for a further two years until 2017. So it comes as no surprise that her loyal fans are hungry as ever for her VMA return - after all, it was 2007 when she last performed at the awards show, taking to the stage in her bra and pants for 'Gimme More'.

And this year Britney is giving fans more; her ninth studio album 'Glory' has received glowing reviews and she is returning to the UK next month when she headlines a night at the Apple Music Festival as the event celebrates its 10th anniversary at The Roundhouse in Camden, London, on September 27.

On returning to the UK, 'Make Me' hitmaker Britney said: "I'm so excited to go back to London, which is a special place for me to visit and I'm really looking forward to performing at the Apple Music Festival. It's also their 10th birthday! It's going to be a great party."

Forget being a pop princess, Britney is about to take Madonna's crown as the Queen of Pop. What you gonna do? It's Britney Bitch!
