The popular HBO series - which is created by George RR Martin - picked up 12 of the 24 awards it was nominated for including the coveted Best Drama for the second year in a row.

The hit show - which stars the likes of Emilia Clarke, Sophie Turner and Kit Harrington - broke the record at the annual glamorous ceremony, which was held in Los Angeles, California, after it nabbed the prestigious gong once again.

Despite missing out on half of the awards it was up for, it still managed to break a record by taking its total ever number of Emmys to 39 - beating the sitcom 'Frasier' by just one with its impressive 38 trophies.

Upon hearing the news that 'Game of Thrones' had won Best Drama, co-writers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss rushed to the stage to collect their prize to make a speech.

David couldn't resist singling out his wife Amanda Peet and three children Frankie, 13, Molly, six, and Henry, 21 months.

He said as he clutched his gong: "Amanda Peet, it's our 10th anniversary in a week. Ten years of non-stop fun. I love you so much. Henry, Frankie, Molly, I love you three so much and I'm so sorry I'm going away next week, and I'm sorry."

While David had pulled out all the stops with his emotional speech, his co-writer D.B. went for a more subtle approach.

Addressing his wife Andrea and two children, he said: "Andrea, Leo, Hugo, you're the reason I get up in the morning. I love you all very much."

Along with Best Drama, 'GOT' also won Best Directing for a Drama Series for Miguel Sapochnik's work and David and D.B. also won Best Writing for a Drama Series.

Other winners included 'Downton Abbey's Dame Maggie Smith, 'The Voice USA' and 'The Night Manager'.
