Brits aren't planning on changing their habits any time soon either

Brits are more likely to drink alcohol compared with anywhere else in the world, a new study has found.

One in 10 Britons admit that they can't go a day without a drink - more than double the international average.

Bupa studied the drinking habits of 12 countries and found the figure from Britain to be more than double the international average.

It also shows that nearly four in ten aren't prepared to change their drinking habits compared to three quartes of people polled in other countries.

Bupa's Dr Layla McCay says: "This is a worrying observation which implies that Brits are particularly resistant to change when it comes to drinking habits.

"Whether that is due to lack of awareness about the effects that alcohol can have - or whether we are simply in denial - there is clearly more work to be done to raise awareness of the associated risks and the real impact it can have on lives."

Experts balme a culture which sees too much leisure revolving around drinking.

The poll is part of Bupa's Health Pulse Survey which examined the drinking habits of more than 13,000 people, over countries including America, Australia, China, Spain and Mexico.

Excessive alcohol consumption is the second biggest cause of breast, liver, bowel and mouth cancer after smoking.

Dr McCay adds: "Excessive drinking carries several health risks, including heart disease, stroke, liver disease, many types of cancer and even diabetes. Something needs to be done immediately. Social lives too often revolve around drinking and it is important we work towards healthier alternatives."
