Adele's mother was furious when her daughter won a Grammy - because she was chewing gum when she went to collect her award.
The 'Chasing Pavements' singer - who won Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance at the prestigious US ceremony in February - phoned her mother to tell her the great news and got chastised.
The Grammys was the most surreal night ever. I had a front-row seat and was convinced someone was going to come along and ask me to move.
She said in an interview with Glamour magazine: "When the award for Best New Artist was announced, I was so convinced that the Jonas Brothers or Duffy were going to win, I wasn't prepared at all. I'd undone my belt and I had chewing gum in my mouth. I nearly cried during my speech but I thought, 'No, I can't because of the Kate Winslet Golden Globe moment. One British person doing that is enough for one year.' When I came off stage and rang my mum to tell her, she was like, 'Yeah, I saw… you had gum in your mouth!' I don't think she was impressed!"
When the 21-year-old star arrived at the ceremony, she was sure she would be thrown out because she didn't think anyone knew who she was.
