Cheryl Cole’s smile has come top in a list of favourite celebrity smiles, while Victoria Beckham pouts too much.

Simon Cowell is described as having a ‘successful’ smile, and Alan Carr’s is ‘sarcastic’, according to body language expert Robert Phipps.

Louise Redknapp and Rachel Stevens also scored high in the survey carried out by Orbit Complete.

Louise Redknapp said: “A friendly smile can display your personality and warm people to you, it makes you more approachable”.

The study found that 59% of people use their smiles to get what they want, such as to make friends, get served at a bar and to get out of a sticky situation.

A quarter of people use their smiles to make a good impression at work with their boss and colleagues. And when it comes to flirting, men are the cheekier gender. Younger men are more likely to use their smiles to attract the ladies, but women are more inclined to smile to simply make friends.

Phipps said: “Different smiles have different effects. If people have that winning smile, they will naturally be perceived as more confident, pleasant, attractive, sociable and competent.

“A great smile can increase people’s compassion and leniency, influencing the outcome of almost any situation and manipulating the results to their advantage.”

Phipps reveals what these celebrity smiles reveal about their personalities, and how people are likely to react to them:

Cheryl Cole – Perfect Smile. This smile makes people want to smile in return, which releases a little burst of happiness endorphins.

Simon Cowell - Successful Smile. Simon smiles with inner confidence in his abilities to make things happen. People want to be around him because they want to be part of his success.

Leona Lewis - Enigmatic Smile. Leona’s lips are like the Mona Lisa’s, and indicate that there’s more to her than meets the eye.

Victoria Beckham - The Pout. With Victoria’s puckered lips, almost mimicking a kiss, this pout is intended to come across alluring and sexy. But Victoria often forgets that sex appeal also comes from a naughty look in the eyes as well as the mouth.

Russell Brand - Comedy Smile. People on the end of this type of smile are in for a devilish laugh and a completely zany time.

Gordon Ramsay - Intense Smile. Gordon knows he’s in charge here, and he means business. People are expected to deliver to impress him.

Alan Carr - Sarcastic Smile. People know to watch what they say around Alan because they could soon be on the end of his very sharp-witted tongue.

Rachel Stevens - Sweet Smile. This is a cute smile with a slight friendly tilt of the head, which shows interest and makes people connect with Rachel.

Gordon Brown - Flash Smile. Gordon’s ‘flash smile’ appears and disappears from his face in an instant. People don’t warm to him, as his smile deliberate and only employed to gain people’s trust.

Louise Redknapp - Engaging Smile. This smile instantly makes people feel like Louise is interested in them.

Barack Obama - Confident Smile. This smile makes people trust Barack and believe what he says.

David Cameron - Inoffensive Smile. This is a non-threatening and pleasant smile, but it’s not a genuine outburst of happiness.
