Gareth Gates married Suzanne Mole because she reminds him of his mother.

The 24-year-old British singer - who is expecting his first baby with his 31-year-old spouse - always wanted to settle down with a girl who shared characteristics with his beloved mother.

He said: "She's a lot older than me, but I've always gone for older women. The last thing I wanted was to be with someone who's the same age as me and wanted the limelight and the attention.

"She's like my mum really. I always wanted to be with a woman who has the same mindset and wants to look after me like my mum. My mum's the most important person in my life."

Gareth credits his mum for keeping him from going off the rails when he lost his record deal in 2006, after three years making music he was "embarrassed" about.

The star - who finished as runner-up on the first series of 'Pop Idol' in 2002 - added to Weekend magazine: "I wanted to be happy with the music I was making - not feel embarrassed when it was on the radio.

"My mum was there for me - she always has been. We speak every day. There were a few times when I felt I was losing my grip, but I never changed as a person because I kept my family really close."
