Helen Mirren Queen of the Globes

16-01-2007 12:30

Dame Helen Mirren was crowned queen of the Golden Globes last night (15.01.07).

The veteran British star received Best Actress awards for her performance as Queen Elizabeth II in royal drama 'The Queen' and for her eponymous role in the TV mini-series 'Elizabeth I'.

Stephen Frears' hit movie which focuses on the British Royal Family in the wake of the death of Princess Diana in 1997 also won Best Screenplay.

Fellow British star, Sacha Baron Cohen was named Best Actor in a Film Musical or Comedy for his portrayal of a spoof Kazakhstan journalist in 'Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan'.

The comic uncharacteristically picked up the award as himself, and not as his controversial character.

However, he still managed to raise a few laughs, referring to a scene in the movie when he wrestled naked with his co-star Ken Davitian.

He said: "When I was in that scene, and I stared down and I saw your two wrinkled golden globes on my chin I thought to myself, 'I better win a bloody award for this.'"
