Two six year-old twins have inspired their dad to invent an online puzzle game that will net one lucky player a jaw-dropping $1 million in cash – for free. Julian Hanford, who lives and works in Hereford, picked up the idea for the world’s first web-based puzzle The Golden Jigsaw after seeing his children, Lucian and Aurelia, playing online games. ‘Bug and Lou (their nicknames) were piecing together a puzzle on screen, dragging the pieces from the edge of the browser window, and clicking them in place. They were absolutely fascinated by it. It suddenly dawned on me that if there were a way to hide these jigsaw pieces on other web sites, and for players to find them, it would make a really compelling game.’ Now Julian has launched The Golden Jigsaw and early next year, the first person to find all the sections of the 1000-piece puzzle will win the $1,000,000 prize. Playing the game is very simple. Web users sign up to play The Golden Jigsaw for free then search participating websites for the jigsaw pieces – the first player who finishes the puzzle by collecting and placing all 1,000 pieces in an online frame will win the cash prize. Explaining the concept, Julian, who owns ideas company Infinite Ideation, said: ‘The Golden Jigsaw is the 21st Century answer to Kit Williams’ best-selling book Masquerade and I expect it to be as popular. The Golden Jigsaw is three things: a puzzle, a treasure hunt and an educational tool because the players will visit web-sites they would probably would never have come across before. I also hope it will make the Internet fun again.’Sadly for Bug’n’Lou, they will not be taking part in the great jigsaw hunt as players have to be 16 years or over to play the game. And they’re related to the organiser, of course. But you can see them online at Youtube and Myspace, in their own video clips showing the world’s web community how to play the game.
