J.K. Rowling said on Monday that she had stopped working on her new novel because a fan wanted to publish an unofficial encyclopaedia for the Harry Potter series. She felt this stifled her creativity.
The best-selling author and Warner Bros. are suing the US independent publisher RDR Books. They planned to publish "The Harry Potter Lexicon", Steve Wander Ark's reference book based on his fansite.
The 42-year-old creator of the wizard Harry told a New York court that the stress of the case had "decimated my creative work over the past month," reports Reuters.
"This is very personal to me," said Rowling. She famously wrote the first book as a single mother on income support, in a cafe in Edinburgh. She now has an estimated wealth of $1 billion. "I am an author -- 17-years of my work is being exploited here. This is not about money."
