Thompson when he threatened him with a gun.The Hollywood legend fled in fear of his life from the hellraising 'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas' writer.Nicholson said: "One of the first times I met him, he pulled out a gun in the middle of a house. Me and a friend of mine jumped out the window." Thompson': "He wanted to fire a shotgun off but needed a target. He had these propane tanks and he handed me some duct tape and these things that were a bit bigger than a matchbook, and we started taping them on the tanks."I said, 'What are these things?' and he said, 'That's nitro-glycerine.' I immediately put out my cigarette."After Thompson shot himself, Depp and his other friends gathered to fire his ashes out of a cannon, in accordance with his wishes.
