Hollywood actor turned controversial director Mel Gibson met Guatemala's President in the hope of filming a Mayan archaeological site in the country. The director talked to President Oscar Berger on Monday (13Aug07) and expressed an interest to make a movie or documentary of the site 600 kilometers (370 miles) from the capital Guatemala City.Gibson visited the Palace of Culture where he was shown contemporary murals displaying aspects of Mayan life by President Berger bore the pair dined together.Gibson's 2006 film Apocalypto depicted the end of the Mayan civilization.The film recieved much criticism that it depicted the Mayan civilisation as savages and their society as violent.Despite this it was well recieved critically and went on to be a commercial success. The movie grossed almost $120 million at the worldwide box office.It failed however to come any where near the box office takings of Gibson's previous, and highly controversial film The Passion of the Chirst which grossed almost $612 million.
