Liv Tyler threatened to call the police after witnessing a woman shouting at a crying child in the street.
The 'Lord of the Rings' beauty - who has a four-year-old son, Milo, with estranged husband Royston Langdon - was driving along a Los Angeles street on Wednesday (17.06.09) when she saw an older lady screaming and hitting a little boy while he was in his pushchair.
When she eventually left the scene, a visibly upset Liv told waiting photographers: When I saw that, I couldn't take it
The actress was so furious, she almost caused an accident by doing a U-turn and pulling over on the side of the road to reprimand the woman.
Liv told her: "You can't do that! I'm going to call the police, I'm going to call Child Services!"
However, the lady - who appeared to be in her 60s - didn't speak English and kept saying: "No entiendo (I don't understand)."
The actress then tried to comfort the little boy.
When she eventually left the scene, a visibly upset Liv told waiting photographers: "When I saw that, I couldn't take it. I had to do something."
Liv has a keen interest in child welfare and is an active supporter of the United Nations Children's Fund.
She also served as spokesperson for the 2004 Givenchy Mother's Day promotion, in support of UNICEF's Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus campaign.
