Marianne Faithfull has cancer

Singer Marianne Faithfull has been diagnosed with breast cancer.The 59-year-old star, who shot to fame as the girlfriend of Rolling Stones frontman Sir Mick Jagger in the 60s, was diagnosed with the potentially fatal illness in France, where she has a second home.Faithfull, who mostly resides in Ireland, has now postponed her scheduled world tour, which was due to begin in October in Paris, so she can battle the disease.She said: "I have absolute faith and confidence in my fantastic medical team and of course I will be well again, if not better than ever. Next year's tour, I want to assure fans, will be one big celebration."Her publicist also assured fans that Faithfull - who has been married three times, has a grown-up son, Nicholas, who she had when she was 18, and two grandchildren - is confident of overcoming the cancer.They said: "The disease has been quickly discovered by doctors in France - where Marianne stays when not at home in Ireland - and the prognosis for a return to full health is excellent. Indeed, Marianne is looking forward to playing the re-scheduled tour in 2007." The singer, who was discovered by the Rolling Stones' manager Andrew Loog Oldham, began her career in 1964 and dated Jagger throughout most of the 60s. Her first hit record 'As Tears Go By' was co-written by Jagger and Stones guitarist Keith Richards.
