Matthew McConaughey dislikes too many rules in a relationship.

The 'Ghosts of Girlfriends Past' actor - who has an eight-month-old son, Levi, with partner Camila Alves - is a "free spirit" and believes romance thrives when people are more relaxed.

He said: "We don't have the three week rule, where we can't be apart for longer than that. We've never been into rules. If you give me rules, I'll break them. I'd make sure it was 22 days - bust it by a day.

"We're much easier on each other than that. If we don't have rules we'll probably go to the end of time without being apart for more then two weeks.

"I'm a free spirit, but a free spirit with responsibility."

Matthew has previously refused to change his ways for a woman but admits he has adapted his lifestyle since becoming a father.

He added to Britain's Glamour magazine: "I'm not big on someone trying to change me. But I'm in a relationship and I'm a monogamous man. Have I changed? In some ways, because I might think if something I do gives Camila more displeasure than it gives me pleasure, and it'll put her in a bad mood, I won't do it. I'll make my life better doing something she likes."
