Mel Gibson most powerful celebrity
Mel Gibson has been named the world's most powerful celebrity - outclassing last year's winner Jennifer Aniston.The 48-year-old 'Passion of the Christ' director won top spot with a pay packet of $210million and the most international press coverage.The Forbes Celebrity 100 rankings put golf star Tiger Woods in second place, as the top-earning athlete with $80million, and talk-show host Oprah Winfrey in third - who cashed-in as much as Gibson.
Hollywood actor Tom Cruise scored fourth and the Rolling Stones shot to fifth place from 10th last year after boosting their massive tour revenue with a best-selling DVD.Once-penniless single mum, JK Rowling, came sixth after selling more than 250million copies of her five 'Harry Potter' books.Catherine Zeta-Jones sits at 56, while her actor husband Michael Douglas, didn't make the list.
Last year's winner, 'Friends' star Jennifer Aniston, dropped to 17, while further casualties include sexy star Jennifer Lopez and her former fiancée, Ben Affleck, who don't even get a mention.Peter Kafka of Forbes magazine explained the scientific method of working out the most powerful celebrity, saying: "Very broadly, it's a combination of money and fame. We divide the celebrity world into categories and we find the top earners in each category. The power list compares them."
