Kevin stands on Dungeness Beach looking out to sea. He trudges down the beach until he spots a man lying in one of the beach huts. He approaches warily and checks to see if the man is alive. The man, Jed, wakes up and Kevin walks off. Jed doesn’t know where he is. Jed catches up with Kevin and claims he was dumped here during his stag night. Kevin tells him where he is and Jed heads off. Jed is a little worse for wear so Kevin tells him that he’ll get him to the pub nearby. Jed shows Kevin a picture of his little girl and asks Kevin if he has kids. Kevin says no. Kevin explains who he was and tells Jed to respect the garden as it was Jarman’s legacy. Kevin came here with a girl once, it was the beginning of the 5 good years they had together. Kevin and Jed approach the pub where Kevin has been staying. Kevin goes to get his things as he has a ferry to catch but he feels bad about Jed and offers to buy him a drink.Jed is flirting with Vicki, the barmaid, when Kevin appears with his bags. Vicki can’t believe that Kevin is finally leaving. Kevin pushes Jed for information about him. Jed explains that he doesn’t know how to be a dad to his little girl. Kevin tells Jed that he’s young and that he’s got time to sort his life out. Kevin offers Jed some money to help him out but Jed turns it down. Kevin tells him he’s heading to France but then heads to the loo and tells Vicki that he’ll need his room for as long as she can give it to him. Looking at Jed, he tells her that his ticket won’t go to waste. As Kevin is about to leave the loo he takes £200 out of his pocket and replaces the rest. He re-enters the bar only to realise that Jed has gone and he’s taken his bag and coat with him. Kevin rushes outside to see Jed boarding a bus – he shouts to him that he was going to give him the ticket anyway and Jed just shrugs. The bus pulls away round the corner but then he hears the squealing of brakes and a loud crash. Kevin runs in the direction of the bus. Kevin runs round the corner and sees carnage – the bus has crashed with a lorry. Kevin walks through the chaos and sees Jed who is bleeding profusely from a head wound. Jed doesn’t know where he is but knows he needs to get home. Jed dies in Kevin’s arms.Denise places the last of Kevin’s clothes into a bin bag. Denise explains to Carly that she’s bagged up Kevin’s clothes for Deano and her to look through. Carly tells her it is bin day tomorrow – she’ll take the bags out to the street for her. Carly dumps the bags and sees Deano who tells her Shirley is in the pub. Shirley glances towards the door as Carly enters. Things are a little awkward between them. Shirley has managed to get time off but Carly is too wrapped up in her darts game. She asks Shirley to get them some drinks. Shirley asks if Carly is trying to punish her and Carly tells her not to flatter herself. Shirley reaches out for her arm which Carly jerks away and releases the dart she is holding which ends up in Mo’s bum. Shirley pulls Carly out of the pub. Charlie and Phil debate who is pulling the dart out. Shirley and Carly argue – Carly blames her for everything. The alcohol catches up with Carly and she is sick. A traumatised Phil has pulled the dart out of Mo’s bum. Shirley asks Phil if she can clean Carly up, she can’t take her back to Pat’s in this state. Carly is embarrassed but Shirley tells her not to be. Shirley tells Carly about how she met Kevin.Deano is with Pat – he thinks that he’ll call Carly to find out how things are going. Pat reassures him that everything will be going well. Denise tells them she’s popping out for air. Denise passes the Minute Mart. She picks up a copy of the Gazette. Denise is looking at the flats to rent page in the Gazette. She’s already circled a few. Denise leaves a message for Libby and Chelsea. She’s upset but trying to cover it. Denise pops in to say goodnight. Pat tells her that they are going to get through everything.A cab pulls onto the Square and ploughs into the bin bags outside Pat’s house. A broken Kevin steps out the cab and realises that his possessions have been dumped in the street. Kevin sees Carly and Shirley having a laugh together – it is his worst nightmare. He heads for the car lot. Carly and Shirley tentatively agree that they’ve had a good night. Kevin enters the portacabin and is shocked to see it has been wrecked. Kevin’s hurt and baffled as to what has been going on. He attempts to tidy up the portacabin. Carly notices a light on in the car lot portacabin and realises that someone is in there and picks up an empty bottle as a weapon. She sees Kevin sitting at the desk and can hardly believe her eyes. She hugs him tightly but then quickly turns on Kevin who is asking how everyone is. She’s not interested in what he has to say. Kevin tells her that he missed her and she pushes him away – how can he dare say something like that? Kevin apologises to Carly but she can’t believe he left when they needed him the most. Kevin is upset when Carly calls him Kevin and not Dad. She wants to know where he’s been and why he’s come back but Kevin is still in a stupor after witnessing the crash. Carly tells him to go – they’ve all grieved and moved on with their lives. Kevin looks at Carly but she doesn’t back down. Kevin exits. Kevin walks through the Square wanting to go home but not being able to.Deano wonders how things are going between Carly and Shirley. He goes to get one of Kevin’s DVDs to take his mind off things but Pat explains that there has been a bit of a clean out… Deano shouts up to Denise demanding to know where his Dad’s stuff is. Deano picks up Kevin’s belongings from the street. He tells Denise she had no right to get rid of Kevin’s stuff. Denise announces that the girls and she are moving out. Deano feels guilty. Deano wants to know from Carly why she threw Kevin’s stuff out. Pat wants to know how Carly got on with Shirley. Carly says it went well. Pat is concerned as Carly heads for the kitchen. Once alone, she starts to make a cup of tea and breaks down in tears. Shirley is feeling confident and pleased with the way the evening went. She smiles at a punter who approaches her at the bar. She tells him that there’s a bar down the road that she’s going to, why doesn’t he join her? She’s hurt when he says he’ll go if her mate (Carly) will be there. Phil tells Shirley to go home – he’ll handle the group of blokes. Shirley passes them on her way out and is humiliated as they woof at her. Shirley exits the Vic and sees Kevin. He keeps walking but Shirley calls after him. Kevin tells her that he doesn’t have to explain himself to her. Shirley feels pity for Kevin and offers to help him clean himself up. Shirley and Kevin talk – he thinks that Shirley has poisoned his family against him. Shirley points out that they are all angry; he should have let them know that he was okay. She tells him that they are not that different and Kevin’s anger begins to build. Their conversation descends into an argument and he throws an ashtray at the wall. He offers her some money to replace it and pulls out some change and the bus ticket from his pocket. Shirley sees the pain on Kevin’s face and asks him what has happened. Kevin has told Shirley about the crash etc. When Jed died in his arms he felt a pull to come home but he’s lost everything – he doesn’t know where home is anymore. Shirley puts her arms round him to comfort him. They look at each other and Shirley leans in and kisses him. They are quickly lost to lust…
