Whoopi Goldberg has announced that her mother passed away last week.
The Oscar-winning actress made the announcement about her late mother Emma Johnson on today’s season premiere of The View, the all-female panel show she presents.
Prior to the announcement, her co-host Barbara Walters had discussed what a hard time Whoopi had experienced over the summer break.
“This past August was one of the best times of your life and one of the worst times of your life,” Barbara said to Whoopi, to which the star responded. “My mom passed on the 29th of August.”
Emma’s death on August 29 was a result of a stroke she had suffered earlier. This had occurred whilst Whoopi was performing in a stage adaptation of her 1992 movie Sister Act in London, England.
The actress left England as soon as she heard of the stroke to be with her mother in her final days.
Whoopi spoke of her sadness at the loss, and says she will remain strong thanks to the support she has from her brother.
"My brother and I were very, very lucky to have her in our lives," she explained.
"And so, I’m not sad because she had a great time.... I think I’m just sad sometimes because I think, 'Who will love me the way that she did?' But I realised that my brother and I have each other so we’re OK."
