The 33-year-old singer - who came second on season eight of the FOX talent show in 2009 - isn't surprised that the series is being cancelled as he believes aspiring stars are opting to find fame by uploading videos of themselves online rather than apply for reality TV shows.

Speaking of the 'American Idol' producers' decision to pull the plug after season 15, he said: "I think it's about time.

"Talent competitions have been around for a while - look at 'Star Search', which is what I grew up with - and it's great that talent can be discovered and fans can be involved. Now YouTube is [an avenue] for talent. Things might be shifting."

The 'For Your Entertainment' singer also reflected on his time on the show and confessed he didn't really understand what he was "getting into" when he agreed to take part.

He said: "I don't think I fully understood what I was getting into when I auditioned. I was just looking for new opportunities.

"At the time, I wasn't able to look forward in my career the way I should be. Six years later, I've grown up a little bit and have an amazing team around me. I feel much more settled."

Adam - who started touring with Queen following his stint on the series - recently released his new album 'The Original High' and is pleased the record reflects his own music tastes.

He explained to HuffPost Live: "I had a little time off, and I was at home recalculating what I wanted to do, and living as close as I can to a real life.

"This album feels more like the music I listen to. I've hung up the costumes and theatricality."
