The plaque confirmed the time of the birth and has been signed by the doctors looking after the Duchess, Kate Middleton.

It read: "Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge was safely delivered of a daughter at 8.34am today.

"Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well."

The first confirmation of the happy news was made via Kensington Palace's official Twitter account.

The announcement read: "Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge was safely delivered of a daughter at 8.34am. The baby weighs 8lbs 3oz. The Duke of Cambridge was present for the birth.

"The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales & The Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Harry & members of both families have been informed. Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well."

Earlier today (02.05.15), a town crier announced the birth of the baby, who is fourth in line to the throne, outside the Lindo Wing at St Mary's Hospital in West London.
