The 40-year-old singer ended his four-year marriage to the country singer in July 2015 and he admits he was in "the middle of hell" while writing his new album, 'If I'm Honest'.

Asked if one of the songs, 'She's Got a Way with Words', which is about a lying and cheating lover, is about Miranda, he told Billboard magazine: "When we recorded the vocals for some of these songs, I was only six months removed from when all the c**p went down.

"When you have a broken heart - at least, when I do - you got to get it out of your system. You want people to sympathise with you. I was at rock bottom, in the middle of hell."

The 'Voice USA' coach admits the demise of his marriage had a heavy influence on the record, but so too did his new relationship with Gwen Stefani.

He said: "You can learn some facts of my divorce. Maybe not specifics, but you can get a general idea about it.

"It is my divorce record, but maybe even more than that, it's my happy, falling-in-love record too."

Blake admits he and Gwen barely knew one another when they returned to work on 'The Voice' and he revealed he had split from Miranda.

And with the No Doubt singer secretly going through her own heartbreak after splitting from then-husband Gavin Rossdale, the 'Came Here To Forget' singer initially thought she just felt "super bad" for his situation.

He said: "I won't forget that day. I looked over at Gwen - who I didn't really know - and she had these huge tears in her eyes. I thought, 'Wow, she feels super bad for me!' "

After bonding through their break-ups, Blake credits Gwen - who has sons Kingston, 10, Zuma, seven, and two-year-old Apollo with Gavin - as having "saved my life."

He added: "Who else on earth could understand going through a high-profile divorce from another musician? You can't even imagine the similarities in our divorces."
