Brad Pitt was a young child when he was given his first shotgun.

The actor admits his relatives gifted him the weapon whilst he was in kindergarten, as part of a "rite of passage" that members in his family go through as youngsters.

He explained to Radio Times magazine: "There's a rite of passage where I grew up of inheriting your ancestors' weapons.

"My brother got my dad's, I got my grandfather's when I was in kindergarten."

Despite inheriting the gun at such a young age, the star insists he never took having it at hand lightly as his father taught him to have a "profound respect" for the weapon.

"The positive is that my father instilled in me a profound and deep respect for the weapon."

Proud of the tradition he believes everybody has the right to own a firearm, and he "feels better having a gun" at his home.
