The 36-year-old actor - who made a New Year's resolution to "learn new things" - is now on the hunt for a professional tutor as he fears his attempts to teach himself the instrument are not going to get him to the standard he wants.

However, while he's questioning his own abilities, Channing opted to "shame himself" by showing his fans what he's learned already.

Speaking in a video posted on his social media accounts, he explained: "I'm going to shame myself into getting better by showing you, where I'm at. Two and a half weeks into learning how to play the piano. Bare with me, this is going to be brutal."

He captioned the image: "Hahaha! Keeping my New Year's resolution to "learn new things". But teaching myself piano is brutal. Got to get some legit lessons soon."

However, fans were impressed by the 'Magic Mike XXL' actor's efforts at tapping out Beethoven's 'Für Elise'.

One user, lainey_d, wrote: "That's good for a beginner! (sic)"

With another fan named baarbs_ramos adding: "OMG! I'm loving with that! (sic)"

A third user named trudih73 branded his wife Jenna Dewan-Tatum "lucky", she wrote: "I think you did a wonderful job since your teaching yourself but it don't hurt that your gorgeous self is playing it either lol your wife is a lucky woman."

Channing - who has three-year-old daughter Everly with Jenna - previously admitted he has a habit of practicing things until "a point that is probably unhealthy", especially if he's nervous.

Discussing having to sing and dance in 'Hail Caesar!', he said: "I spent about three months preparing. It's the most I've ever prepped for a six-minute section in a movie.

"We went over Christmas and New Year's [in 2014], so I had all that time to let it gestate. I let it sink into my bones over the holiday break.

"When I'm nervous about something, I drill it to a point that is probably unhealthy, but as long as it works even halfway, I'm happy at the end of the torturous day."
