David Hasselhoff has revealed his girlfriend Hayley Roberts' family didn't say a word to him when she first took him to meet them because they were so "freaked out" by the former 'Baywatch' star.

Hasselhoff insists people are not often scared to talk to him but it was a different story in the blonde beauty's home nation as both her parents and their compatriots found him to be quite intimidating.

Speaking at UKTV Live, a preview event to showcase the broadcaster's upcoming shows, to promote his new spoof documentary, 'Hoff the Record', he said: "They're freaked out of me in Wales, they didn't talk to me in Wales.

"Hayley's family were like, 'Hi sir.' As soon as I walked about they were like, 'He's a nice guy, he's tall, he doesn't look as old as he is, I'm the same age as him.' "

The 62-year-old star - who has been dating Hayley for more than three years - admits he doesn't get the same reaction in England as the general public are always keen to introduce themselves to him.

He added: "I do a lot of pantos and my girlfriend's Welsh and I've toured a lot with my own show so I know a lot about different places and different cultures and different loyalties.

"Everyone is very proud of who they are. Over here it's really kind of cool. I can drive down to Devon and people will say, 'Hi Hoff, do you want to come in for a cup of tea?' And I'll be like, 'Oh, sure.' They're not freaked out."
