The late actor, most famous for his role in the 1998 titular movie 'The Big Lebowski', passed away from kidney and lung disease in Santa Fe, New Mexico, on Tuesday (02.08.16), his wife Sarah Koeppe confirmed to the Los Angeles Times.

While he starred in several movies and on Broadway, he became known for his role as The Big Lebowski, a cantankerous, wheelchair-bound character who escapes kidnap by thugs who instead mistakenly target Jeff Bridges' character The Dude.

But Sarah told the publication that his "crowning achievement" was the role of Benjamin Franklin in the 1997 Broadway production of '1776'.

The actor starred in 'Blazing Saddles', 'Crime Busters' and he portrayed the titular role in 1985 motion picture 'Santa Claus: The Movie'.

David also had a glittering TV career, appearing in several hit shows including 'Murder, She Wrote', 'Magnum, P.I.', 'Star Trek: The Next Generation', 'The West Wing', 'Gilmore Girls' and 'Columbo'.

His latest TV role saw him play Eugene Hamilton in a festive episode of 'It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia' in 2009.

David's most recent movie was also in 2009 when he appeared in thriller 'Locker 13' alongside Krista Allen and Tatyana Ali.
