The Hollywood actress - who divorced Coldplay star Chris Martin earlier this year - has admitted she still finds it tough to accept that their marriage collapsed, having grown up in such a stable family environment.

Speaking during a Q&A in Los Angeles, the 43-year-old star was asked to name one thing in her life that didn't go as planned, and she replied: "My marriage. I am from a tribe of people who stay married. My parents stayed married until my dad died."

Gwyneth explained how her well-balanced upbringing had given her the hope that her 12-year marriage to Chris would last all their lives.

The actress - who has two children, Apple, 11, and Moses, nine, with her ex-husband - told the New York Daily News: "I really don't come from a culture of divorce at all and I had very high hopes for what my life could be like.

"I think that it was very difficult for me that I couldn't do that and that I wasn't able to be married to the father of my children for the rest of my life.

"It was very challenging for me in terms of having to re-assess what that said about me, ideas that I had about that kind of failure."
