The 23-year-old singer and the chart-topping duo - who collaborated for 2016 hit 'Closer' - were presenting the award for Top Hot 100 Song at the ceremony in Las Vegas this weekend, and took a moment to honour the memory of the late DJ, who passed away in April this year at the age of 28.

Alex Pall of The Chainsmokers said: "His passing was a great loss for the music world, and for us. He was an artist who inspired so many and in so many ways. And, simply put, he meant so much to us and everyone in the EDM community."

Whilst Halsey noted that his passing reminded her to be "supportive" of her friends and family.

She added: "Everyone who worked with him would agree that he was such a joy. And it makes this tragedy all the more painful. [His death is] a reminder to all of us to be there and to support and love all of our friends and family members who may be struggling with mental health issues."

Later in the evening, Alex and his Chainsmokers bandmate Andrew Taggart were on stage once again when they won the award for Top Dance/Electronic Artist, and dedicated the trophy to the 'Wake Me Up' hitmaker.

Alex said in his speech: "We want to dedicate this award to Avicii. None of us would be here. Everyone who was nominated for this award was massively influenced by him. He is someone who made us believe this is a realistic career and something we could do with our lives. He inspired all of us, influenced our music, influenced pop music and music in general, and he will be missed.

"I hope you're somewhere, I hope you found peace, and we love you."

Avicii was found dead on April 20 in Muscat, Oman, where it is believed he took his own life.
